The series isuseful for studying the economic activity of small areas;analyzing economic changes over time; and as a benchmarkfor statistical series, surveys, and databasesbetween economic censuses. The series serves variousbusiness uses such as analyzing market potential, measuringthe effectiveness of sales and advertising programs,setting sales quotas, and developing budgets. The dataalso are used by government agencies for administrationand planning.Most of the country\ue2\u20ac\u2122s economic activity is covered inthis series. Data are excluded for self-employed people,domestic service workers, railroad employees, agriculturalproduction workers, most government employees, andemployees on ocean-borne vessels or in foreign countries.Data are provided by industry in the following economicdivisions: agricultural services, forestry, and fishing; mining;construction; manufacturing; transportation and publicutilities; wholesale trade; retail trade; finance, insurance,and real estate; and services. Data are tabulated byindustry as defined in the Standard Industrial ClassificationManual: 1987.This series has been published annually since 1964 andat irregular intervals dating back to 1946. The comparabilityof data over time may be affected by definitionalchanges in establishments, activity status, and industrialclassifications.
