Growth in ridership at the railtransit agencies in the Federal Transit Administration\ue2\u20ac\u2122s (FTA) State Safety OversightProgram far outpaces other modes of transportation. In spite of this high level ofpassenger service, rail transit remains among the safest modes of transportation inthe United States.Yet accidents do occur on rail transit systems and their impacts are tragic. Duringcalendar year 2008, 992 accidents occurred that met FTA accident reportingthresholds. These accidents resulted in 37 fatalities and 677 injuries (excludingsuicide and trespasser fatalities).
