Global positioning systems for personal travel surveys : Lexington area travel data collection test

The sample comprised 100 households, with the average household size 2.94 persons and with an average of 2.17 vehicles. This research project configured the automatic data collection device and deployed the devices in the Lexington MPO planning area to record information about the personal travel behavior of the 100 respondents. The field test equipment successfully captured both the GPS data and self-reported information from approximately 85 percent of the respondents. The respondents were eager to use the new technology, found it easy to install in their vehicle, and expressed a preference for the automatic data collection device over more traditional methods. Results indicate that the Lexington respondents take more trips of shorter distances than past national estimates would suggest. 92 p., 4 appendices, figs. and tables
