How do urban transport companies see the investment in battery electric buses in Portugal? : buyers approach

Lately, the concern about environmental protection, especially related to Greenhouse Gases Emissions, has been growing globally. Several countries have begun to adopt measures that promote the reduction of those emissions. Organizations also had to adapt, since stakeholders care about the impact that products and services have on the world’s sustainable development. Automobile industry was not an exception. Buses have a large contribution in the emission of gases due to their energy source, engine and constant activity in cities. Consequently, Electric Buses have begun to gain interest, especially those powered by Batteries, since they are known for not emitting Greenhouse Gases during their activity. This dissertation intends to understand the view that the companies responsible for urban transport in Portugal have about the investment in Battery Electric Buses. The amount of information available regarding how this reality is experienced in Portugal is scarce. Thus, the focus is to understand if what influences that investment are concerns about the negative impact that this activity has on the environment and if this implementation makes sense in Portugal. A qualitative analysis was carried out through semi-structured interviews with four companies. With the analysis done, it was possible to conclude that the investment in this type of vehicles is only possible due to the incentives that exist by the government and that the interest in Battery Electric Buses arises due to reduced operating and maintenance costs associated with them.Ultimamente a preocupação com a proteção do ambiente, especialmente com a Emissão de Gases com Efeito Estufa, tem vindo a crescer mundialmente. Muitos países começaram a adotar medidas que promovam a redução destas emissões. As organizações também tiveram de adaptar-se, porque os stakeholders preocupam-se com o impacto que os produtos e serviços têm no desenvolvimento sustentável do mundo. A indústria automóvel não foi exceção. Os autocarros contribuem bastante na emissão de gases devido à sua fonte de energia, motor e atividade constante nas cidades. Assim, os Autocarros Elétricos começaram a ganhar interesse, especialmente os movidos por Baterias, porque são conhecidos por não emitir Gases com Efeito Estufa durante a sua atividade. Esta dissertação pretende entender a visão que as empresas responsáveis pelo transporte urbano em Portugal têm do investimento em Autocarros Elétricos movidos a Bateria. A quantidade de informação disponível relativamente a como esta realidade é vivida em Portugal é escassa. Deste modo, o foco é perceber se o que influencia este investimento são as preocupações relativamente ao impacto negativo que esta atividade tem no ambiente e se consideram que esta implementação faz sentido em Portugal. Foi feita uma análise qualitativa através de entrevistas semiestruturadas a quatro empresas. Com a análise feita, foi possível concluir que o investimento neste tipo de veículos só é possível devido aos incentivos que existem por parte do governo e que o interesse em Autocarros movidos a Bateria surge especialmente devido à redução de custos de operação e manutenção associada aos mesmos
