China’s institutional environment significantly impacts foreign firms’ activities, strategies and performances. This study aims to understand how foreign firms use strategic alliances to respond to institutional pressures in China. To answer our research question, we draw from Scott’s framework on institutions (Scott, 2014) and Oliver’s typology of strategic responses (Oliver, 1991). Formal institutions in China have limited reach and power, so our study focuses on informal institutions. Using a qualitative approach, we studied three companies in the wine sector for a comparative case study.
