The study analyses white women‟s experiences in colonial Zimbabwe in relation to domesticity. As in most new colonial territories, one of the mandates of the coloniser was to domesticate „the wild‟ (that is the indigenous populations and their environment) and make the conquered areas ideal for settlement and exploitation. The civilising mission was central to the project of domesticating the empire. The domestication of empire, however, was more complex and went beyond the mere extension of western civilisation and the taming of the physical environment.
