The aim of this research was to determine the origins of the microbes that drive bone diagenesis. Studying the microstructural changes skeletal tissue can undergo after death could lead to more accurate ways of establishing postmortem intervals when dealing with skeletonised remains. Previous research has allowed the development of methods to determine the post mortem interval (PMI) during the decomposition of the soft tissue, but this estimation becomes less accurate as the PMI increases.
