Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Social Science in the Centre for Applied Social Sciences, University of Natal.This study investigates the work of three rural community projects implementing primary health care through the use of auxiliary workers: the Manguzi Community Health Project in KwaZulu, the Manzimahle Village Health Workers Project in Transkei, and the Elim Care Group Project in Gazankulu. Their work was viewed from the perspective of the community-based approach to development, which itself is an integral part of primary health care
