A COMPARISON OF SOME OF THE FATWAS ISSUED BY THE MEDICAL AFFAIRS

In history and nowadays, in a constantly globalizing world, Islamic religion and medicine have provoked numerous heated debates, especially at critical moments in life and death, transplantation of human organs, abortion and other issues. All Islamic law schools consider a woman’s life threat as an acceptable cause of abortion, and some allow abortion to preserve a woman’s health. Islam favors abortion under strict conditions, such as a risk to the mother’s life, a birth defect, and fetal deformity, or if pregnancy is the result of sin. Some ulema do not allow abortion to maintain a woman’s health. An analysis of fatwas on the issue of artificial insemination shows that this process is permissible between a married couple, but donating a male sperm to a stranger in a Sunni madhhab is strictly forbidden and is tantamount to adultery. Since organ transplantation is a relatively new and non-alternative method, some of the ulema have a negative attitude to this, but modern Islamic organizations consider organ transplantation to be permitted under certain conditions. Surgery to correct an external defect or deviation aimed at improving the quality of life has been recognized as acceptable in a number of fatwas around the world.
