This thesis presents two procedures for designing industrial experiments with restricted experimental resources. First, a two-stage approach is developed using the D- and Ds-optimality criteria in combination, to focus information into the effects of most relevance to the robust engineering design of a product. The method is demonstrated by finding a design for a study on gas sensors. The second approach forms the major contribution of this thesis. Semicontrolled experiments are developed for use in situations where the factor values cannot be pre-determined, although the way in which they are combined with other factors can be controlled.
