Childhood obesity is a worldwide epidemic. The disease is now the most common chronic disease affecting children of all ages and childhood obesity rates have tripled since the 1970s. Data from 2015-2016 show that one in five children, ages six to 19 in the United States is obese (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).
