Although this emigrant guide emphasized relatively settled areas around the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, it also contained information about trans-Mississippi country, based, in part, on previous accounts. William Darby served under General Jackson in Louisiana as surveyor for the area. His knowledge of geography came from personal explorations in Texas, Louisiana, and the border with Canada. Because of these explorations, he was able to help in the delineation of both the northern and southern boundaries of the United States.
