The mechanisms for the destruction of chlorinated benzenes in the high temperature environment of an incinerator are described. Special attention is paid to the importance of pyrolytic processes. The role of hydrogen atom induced displacement of chlorine from the chlorobenzenes is emphasized. Recent measurements on the rate constants for these processes are described. The usefulness of this type of data is illustrated and we examine possible future applications of similar information for the solution of incineration problems
