The community of Rainbow sits northeast of the mine shaft. Rainbow is a companion town to Dragon and Watson. The homes were filled with miners and their families. Living in Rainbow was a worry for the families with children because of the vein being so close to the town. A wire fence was strung along the edge of the vein but it wasn't much of a deterrent. Once Marie Nielson told about losing her cat but soon found it, being hoisted up out of the mine on a gunny sack. Work at the Rainbow Mines began in 1912 by the Barber Gilsonite Company of Philadelphia. The vein was 25 miles long.
