dissertationAtherosclerosis leads to about 640,000 deaths every year in the United States and is the leading cause of death in this country. Activation of monocytes by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is a critical step in atherosclerosis. Oxidized LDL phospholipids are able to activate the platelet-activating factor (PAF) receptor. This receptor plays a key role in the activation of physiological leukocyte responses and may play a role in the development of atherosclerosis. Oxidized LDL phospholipids are also able to induce monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), another molecule with a critical role in both physiological inflammation and atherosclerosis.
