dissertationThe incidence and prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes are increasingrapidly worldwide. There has been considerable interest in the factors contributing to both obesity and diabetes. While adipocytes were previously thought to be inert storage depots for excess calories, recent studies have demonstrated that adipose tissue is an important endocrine organ. Adipose tissue-produced hormones are involved in regulating a wide range of metabolic and behavioral processes. Two of these hormones are adiponectin and leptin. Adiponectin has been causally linked to insulin sensitivity while leptin is involved in the regulation of food intake and energy balance.
