When Sandy Beveridge challenged students in her course on Physical Education for Elementary School Teachers to learn to make some inexpensive play equipment, the College of Health class delivered, literally and figuratively. They fashioned hula hoops from flexible sprinkler pipes, made floor hockey sticks with rubber- tipped aluminum rods, and brought these and other handmade physical education equipment to Salt Lake's Bennion Elementary School gymnasium, where they gave the children a few pointers about their use. U Events to Honor King Legacy The following events are being held on campus as part of the University's 1 5th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. The theme for this year's observance is " Stories of Culture and Respect." This Thursday at noon in Kingsbury Hall, Paula Gunn Allen, professor of English, American Indian Studies and Creative Writing at UCLA, will present " Walking in Two Worlds and Keeping Your Balance." Allen is the recipient of numerous literary awards. She is the author of several books, and collections of poetry and traditional and contemporary American Indian myths. This Friday, at 8 p. m. on KUED Channel 7, a panel of U of U students will discuss issues regarding race, class and gender in Utah. On Monday, Jan. 18 at 7 p. m. in Kingsbury Hall, Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir will perform spirituals, work and play songs, field hollers and other slave songs in the folk tradition. What a Party! Thanks go to the Nutrition Care Services employees whose preparation and hard work helped make UH's annual Holiday Social a success, according to NCS director Laura Robson. " Our employees did a tremendous job of preparing food for the event. I am grateful for their hard work," said Robson. She says UH and SOM employees consumed more than 120 pounds of chip dip, 16 gallons of vegetable dip, 5,500 bottles of sparkling cider, 8,500 cookies and dessert bars, and more than 11,000 other treats. Enjoy Photography in Hallside Gallery Jim Maire, a former Medical Illustration Service photographer, is the featured artist this month in the Hallside Gallery, AC113SOM. A graduate in fine arts from Indiana University, Maire enjoys photographing landscapes. " My photography captures a sense of the abstract in form and color that evokes a mood of meditative simplicity and a respect for the timelessness of the earth," said Maire. Keep That New Year's Resolution NCS Offers Healthy Eating Classes Nutritionists from Nutrition Care Services are sponsoring healthy eating classes throughout 1999. Classes will held on the last Thursday of every month from 4- 5: 30 p. m. and again from 7- 8: 30 p. m. at the Sugarhouse Health Center, 1138 East Wilmington Avenue ( 2200 South). Each class is $ 5 to cover the cost of handouts. The first class, " New Year's Resolutions- Eat Healthy, Lose Weight," is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 28. NCS is also sponsoring a 10- week healthy eating class at Wasatch Clinics. Classes will be held Wednes-day evenings from 5- 6 p. m. Jump Start Your Heart Next Month The Madsen Preventive Cardiology Program is offering a healthy cooking course taught by Carolyn Hollingshead, Ph. D., clinical instructor in the Division of Foods and Nutrition in the College of Health. Classes will be held Feb. 1 and 8, from 6: 30- 8: 30 p. m., at the Red Butte Health Center. Jim Maire Help Needed in Finding Stolen Bag A black bag stolen recently from the Department of Radiology containes documents required of a UH medical team to enter and practice medicine in Ghana. Peer Pressure Prompts Cleaner Hands According to the Oct./ Nov. 1999 issue of Healthcare FoodService Magazine, studies show that if no one is present in the bathroom, only five percent of the popula-tion will wash their hands. If someone else is present, 65 percent will wash their hands. The magazine says proper washing should last at least ten seconds, or long enough to sing " Row, Row, Row Your Boat" twice.
