January 2006 Forums, Insider to Answer Top Employee- Submitted Questions The World Class U Employee Forums, beginning Jan. 23, and this issue of Insider have been designed to answer employees' most frequently asked questions. During the last forums, held in September, employees submitted approxi-mately 120 questions. Questions were placed into categories, including the following top five topics: compensation, parking, benefits, reward and recognition, and hospital facilities. The upcoming World Class U Employee Forums will address compensation, benefits, and the hospital expansion. This issue of the Insider will discuss parking, and reward and recognition. UH Encourages Rewards, Recognition By Rob Kisder, project coordinator hospital administration Some of the feedback from the September 2005 forums was about reward and recognition. The following questions were asked: - How will the U increase rewards to dedicated, consistent, loyal longtime employees? - Why isn't there more individual employee recogni-tion for those going beyond their jobs? Reward and Recognition is the hallmark of our World Class U initiative. Satisfied employees are imperative to the success of our strategic plan. A key element to satisfied employees is ensuring they know they're appreci-ated. The effort is a pilot program to determine ways to better communicate with staff throughout the organization. The e- mail address is askadmin@ hsc. utah. edu. Update on Employee Parking By Rob Kisder, project coordinator hospital administration We are committed to effectively communicate about issues important to you. Results from the September World Class U Employee Forums indicated that parking continues to be a priority. We're encouraged about the progress we've made regarding parking. The O- Zone parking lot has been a huge success. Since its inception more than 700 employees have had free parking. In fact, in October the 725th O- Zone parking pass was distributed, bringing the lot to full capacity. Since then the hospital hasn't been able to release any more permits for this lot. This did not affect anyone who had an O- Zone pass. We're especially gratified about the success of the O-Zone because it was an employee- driven pilot program in collaboration with hospital administrators. The goal of the program was to relieve " A" parking areas close to the hospital. Now parking areas east of the hospital are available for those who would like to park closer. We suggest those in need of a parking space migrate back to the east side. Continued on back UH Rewards, Recognition continued budgeting funds for employee recognition to be used at the discretion of managers. You may see this in the form of a lunch, educational classes or other meaningful activities. In addition, a World Class U Reward & Recognition Team of high- performing employees is actively creating and promoting a hospitalwide recognition program. The following are some of the reward and recognition initia-tives: Stamps of Approval: A thank- you and $ 5 gift card redeemable at Positively U, Moran Eye Center, Hunts-man Cancer Hospital gift shop, U Hospitals & Clinics pharmacies, and Nutrition Care Services' cafeteria and delis. About 1,000 stamps a month are issued to staff. Thank You Notes: A personal thank you from a peer or manager. Personal notes build relationships that create the foundation for a culture of excellence. Anniversary Rewards: Employees reaching the 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, 30-, 35- year mark are recognized each year in a banquet. Holiday Gifts: Did you receive your gift? Hospital Picnic: Judging by the lines, the picnic is the highlight of the summer. Frost Fest: The third annual Frost Fest employee party is set for Jan. 28 at the South Towne Exposition Center. Patients Return Glowing Comments With Satisfaction Surveys By the Outpatient Satisfaction Team The World Class U Outpatient Satisfaction Team has received great feedback from patients who answered the cover- letter questions given with patient surveys in November. More than 150 employees have been recog-nized by their patients for giving excellent care! The following are a few comments received: " Everyone who has assisted me here has done an excellent job. Everyone is kind and considerate and friendly towards me. Above all they listened well!" " I jvas very scared after my diagnosis and everyone here has been fantastic. I have been treated with much kindness and respect and it has helped me feel more at ease." " The entire reception staff is outstanding- they go above and beyond to get you in for an appointment. The nursing staff is also always exceptional, very caring and concerned but always professional." Stay tuned for the next Insider. Update on Employee Parking continued As new buildings are planned and constructed, parking is a priority that is addressed. For example parking spaces were included in the construction of the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Eccles Critical Care Pavilion, Health Sciences Education Building, and the new Moran Eye Center. The future U Hospital expansion project also will increase the parking spaces close to the hospi-tal. The number of additional stalls is undeter-mined at this time, however, maximizing this number is high on the agenda. Public transportation continues to be a solution for many employees. Those who ride TRAX and UTA buses continues to exceed expectations. Parking is a hot topic of conservation here at the U. No doubt about it, parking is a difficult subject because many of us aren't happy about paying to park or parking far away.
