Volume2/1979_October01INTERCOM UNIVERSITY OF UTAH Our new eight-level hospital is now almost 50 percent complete and progressing "very close to schedule," report Medical Center architects. Most of the building's concrete walls have been poured and roofing is underway. The "mechanical pent-houses" which protect the air conditioning, heating and ventilation equipment are covered on both towers. Roofers have begun work on the east tower and will start on the west tower in November. By the time the weather turns cold, the building should be covered and windows installed in the east tower. Window openings in the west tower will have temporary coverings to allow construction crews to work inside through the winter with heat from the new central plant behind the hospital. Inside the building, workers are erecting gypsum wallboard partitions and door frames, roughing in mechanical, plumbing and electrical utilities and installing pipes for medical gases. Two months away from completion, the Dumke Artificial Organs Building is completely enclosed and in the interior finishing stage. Steel erection is complete up to the fifth floor of the six- story research building, and concrete has been poured to the third level. Brick work starts this month, and roofing will start this fall. The laboratory research tower will be completed next November. Excavation for a 700-space parking structure began in mid- September and construction will begin early in November. The helipad will be moved southeast of its present location to accommodate the parking terrace. CENIH2 mmx Departures B. Saunders Midyette, associate administrator, leaves this month to assume the position of associate director for finance at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Mr. Midyette has been in charge of financial services at University of Utah Hospital for the past three years, with responsibility for patient ac-counting, general and cost accounting, medical records, budgeting, computer services and financial review. In the 1977-78 fiscal year he led the conversion to a new computerized billing/receivable system which has reduced University Hospital's accounts receivable (the money owed the hospital by patients) from 95 to 72 days of gross patient revenue as of June 30, 1979. In his position at the 963-bed University of Michigan Hospital, Mr. Midyette will oversee the Hospital's $135 million operating budget and supervise 150 employees in the hospital's financial division. Mr. Freewald has nine years' experience with Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Pennsylvania and in Utah. With Utah BC/BS, he has been director of professional relations, claims processing and the Utah Medicare program. He replaces Richard Stout. Hallside Gallery Hallside Gallery's October exhibit features oil paintings by Dana Alan Maack, son of Julian Maack, director of Medical Illustrations Service. The 24-year old artist has painted seriously for two years and is currently studying under Elaine Bradshaw. His series of landscapes was painted during a recent trip to Banff and Jasper parks in Alberta, Canada. Goings on The second annual crafts bazaar to benefit the Parent To Parent Program of the Intermountain Newborn Intensive Care Center is scheduled for Oct. 26-27 at the Fashion Place Mall and Nov. 1-3 at the Cottonwood Mall. Health Sciences Center volunteers and would- be volunteers who would like to learn more about health care and volunteer issues and share ideas with their fellow workers are invited to a seminar conducted by the volunteer services department. Scheduled for Tues., Oct. 2 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Skaggs Hall auditorium, the seminar will feature talks by Volunteer Services Director Barbara Hogensen, Auxiliary President Betty Bernick, Hospital Administrator Jerry Smith, Gary Jorgensen, Ph.D., Betty Montemayor, MS, MSW, Marianne Leben-ta, RN and Chris Cheson, RN.
