More on Back U Hospital Salutes Its Nurses University Hospital is honoring its 250 registered nurses and 90 licensed practical nurses this week, in conjunction with Utah Nurses' Week (May 1-7) and National Nurses Day, May 3. According to Governor Scott M. Matheson's recent Nurses' Week proclamation, nurses comprise the largest segment of Utah's health care professionals. "University Hospital's health care mission could never be fulfilled without its nurses," says Hospital Administrator George Belsey. "They are multi-talented specialists in both medical care and interpersonal relations. We recognize their importance and thank them for all their dedicated service." Pam Cipriano, R.N., assistant director of nursing services, says nurses do much more than take temperature and blood pressure readings. " A big part of a nurse's job is to spend time with a patient and his family to help them understand the situation," says Ms. Cipriano. "The nurse has to help the patient cope with any new limitations he may have and then teach him how to care for himself after he goes home." Ms. Cipriano says nurses receive basic science training as well as clinical practice while in college. All University Hospital nurses are trained in basic life support or CPR techniques. Intensive care nurses continue that training and become certified in advanced life support. Aerobics Is Back University Medical Center personnel will again have the opportunity to grunt and groan, stretch and bend in an aerobics w program being offered at the College of Nursing. Everyone is invited to attend the class Monday through Thursday, from 4-5 p.m. in room 317, College of Nursing. The cost is $1 per session. Ob/ Gyn Wants Good Suggestions Cerebrovascular Intensive Care Head Nurse Marilyn Crockett, R.N., assists Iris Steva, a physical therapist, with a patient. All intensive care nurses will soon be certified in advanced life support. Sign Up Today for Run for Life There are only a few days left to sign up for the Utah Heart Association's annual "Run For Life," a 10- kilometer run/walk. It will be this Saturday, May 5, beginning at 10 a.m. at Highland High School. Registration materials and T-shirts are available in Community Relations, room 2753, and in University Medical Center's cafeteria during the lunch hour. For a registration fee of $6 or $15 in donations, registrants will receive a bib number, sponsor sheet to record donations, training tips and a T-shirt. Many prizes will be awarded to those raising money in pledges including round- trip tickets to any Frontier Airlines destination in the continental United States and Canada, color TVs, home computers and more. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology wants your ideas about improving patient service, and has placed suggestion boxes in its offices, 2 North and Outpatient Clinic 4, to collect your best thinking. The suggestion boxes are the latest in a series of improvements that have been initiated in Ob/Gyn. The department recently began offering a celebration dinner to parents who deliver babies at University Hospital. It also eliminated the charge placed on the use of cots by overnight visitors. Dr. James R. Scott, Ob/Gyn department chairman, says he believes the best suggestions for improving patient care in the department will come from the patients themselves and those doing the "day-to-day" work, not from administration. Everyone is invited to make suggestions, and can do so anonymously. Dr. Scott says the top three suggestions submitted before June 1st will be awarded a dinner for two
