Volume2/1983_November22INTERCOM Rackley To Head Nutrition Care Laura Rackley began working for University Medical Center Nutrition Care Service while still in high school on the night tray line . . . preparing trays for patients. For the next 15 years, she worked her way up the ladder, through college and was recently appointed the new director of Nutrition Care Service. "I've worked in the dish room, production, the storeroom, as a diet clerk and I've passed trays to patients," Laura says. "I knew in high school that I wanted to go into dietetics, and worked part- time and full-time as much as I could until I got my degree." Laura got a B.S. degree in Nutrition Science in 1973. Following a one-year internship at University Medical Center, she was appointed supervisor of the cafeteria. In 1975, she was named assistant director of Nutrition Care Service and has held that position until now. She left the hospital during that time to "get some other type of experience in case I didn't become a dietitian." She worked as a teller at Zion's Bank for six months. The 31- year- old registered dietitian says there will be no major departmental changes. "We're gearing up for the holidays, right now," she Laura Rackley, the new director of Nutrition Care Service, guarantees the cafeteria and patient food to be the same high quality and good taste, and she's added some more items to the menu. says. After that she plans to start utilizing computers in the department. She also is planning some "monotony breakers," similar to the Halloween activities, for her employees and cafeteria patrons. Laura plans to add some new items to the menu. Scones are now being served in the mornings and other new foods will follow. As far as the department's popular catering service goes, " you won't notice any change," Laura promises. "I love to cook gourmet food and I pull lots of recipes from magazines. We then try them here." The new director promises only the best for patients and cafeteria goers, "besides," she added, "I eat here everyday." New Volunteer Director Named Suzanne Nelson, former University Hospital volunteer and an active member of the Utah Area Association Directors of Volunteers, has been selected from more than 100 applicants as the new Director of Volunteers at University Hospital. Ms. Nelson, currently serves as the executive director of the National Society to Prevent Blindness - Utah Affiliate. She will assume the University Hospital post December 28. Volunteers' Bazaar - December 1 Handmade afghans, baby things, aprons, quilts, Christmas decorations, wreaths, wall hangings and more will be for sale at the University Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary's Annual Bazaar, Thursday, December 1. A year's work has gone into preparing and gathering the bazaar items. They will be sold on the 1st floor bridge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last year, the volunteers raised more than $1,200 from the bazaar and donated it to University Medical Center. They have built an endowment fund of more than $100,000 from which University Hospital draws the interest. All faculty, staff, students and visitors are invited to do their holiday shopping at the bazaar. United Way Drive Nears Completion It will be hard to beat house-keeping this year in the United Way Drive, department employee James Dennies personally donated $100 to the cause. University Medical Center employees have until November 27 to donate to the fund. Holiday Treats Coming Soon New Art Cheers Peds Patients Visit 5 South and take a look at the wall hangings depicting the Seven Dwarfs. The yarn pictures were done and personally delivered by Ada Parsley of San Jose, California. The department also received a "Balloon Man" ceramic painting from Guillermo Granzio of Ben Lomond, California. It is hanging in Pediatric-Adolescent Dialysis. Great food and entertainment is planned for this year's University Medical Center Christmas Party on Thursday, December 15. All faculty, staff and students will get at free prime rib or Cornish game hen lunch. They also will have a chance to win one of many free turkeys in a drawing. Everyone with artistic skills (and even those with none) can design a snowflake to be hung in the windows of the Wasatch Spectrum, the best one will earn a free turkey for its designer. Other prizes will be awarded to runners-up. Department decorating efforts, centered around the theme "A Time For Tradition," will be judged December 14. Last year, Pharmacy IV won the sweepstakes award. More is in the works, so start dieting now! Stolen Scrub Suits Stolen scrub suits cost University Medical Center $25,000 to $30,000 last year, according to University Police Lieutenant Paul Hardy. "We've experienced a tremendous loss," Lieutenant Hardy says. "We're asking for everyone's cooperation to get the problem stopped." Individuals caught taking hospital clothing out of the building will be "stopped, arrested and prosecuted," Lieutenant Hardy says, adding that Medical Center policy allows service officers and University police to search packages if there is "probable cause."
