Volume2/1988_July06UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Dean Harold Wolf Honored As Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Recognition for excellence as an educator - the role he likes best - has been bestowed upon Harold H. Wolf, Ph.D., dean of the College of Pharmacy. Harold Wolf, Ph.D. Dr. Wolf was selected by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Board of Directors to receive the organization's Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Award. The award, sponsored by Marion Laboratories, honors an AACP member for excellence in teaching, educational-related research and service activities. It consists of an engraved Steuben glass owl and a $2,500 cash prize and will be presented August 2 at the AACP's annual meeting in Chicago. "Dr. Wolf's award is richly deserved; he is an outstanding teacher, researcher and administrator. I am delighted with this honor for him and for the College of Pharmacy," said Cecil O. Samuelson, M.D., vice president for health sciences at the University. "The award represents the high point of my career to date. It is very satisfying and gratifying recognition, primarily because it represents distinction for being an educator, and I've always considered myself an educator, "Dr. Wolf said of his selection. The AACP Board cited Dr. Wolf for his strong commitment to excellence in pharmaceutical education at the institutional, national and international levels. Dr. Wolf credited the U of U College of Pharmacy and its faculty as major contributors to his selection. "The success of any individual and the recognition received is very much intertwined with the success of the institution. The excellence of this particular college, and the talented faculty and their success, have made my award possible," he said. The need for the College of Pharmacy to produce excellent practicing pharmacists and also to maintain its prestige as a renowned research center is " a major challenge," Dr. Wolf said. The school's immediate reputation largely depends on the success of its faculty in competitive research funding, winning research prizes and being on the cutting edge of science, the dean noted. (continued on back) U Hospital Board Recognizes Norma Matheson Norma Matheson was awarded a Resolution of Appreciation by the University of Utah Hospital Board June 24, recognizing her efforts as chair of the Utah Nursing Study Task Force. A critical shortage of nurses is developing across the country, with approximately 13 percent of nursing positions presendy unfdled in Utah. It is predicted that the Utah situation will worsen in the next two to three years, according to John A. Reinertsen, University assistant vice president for health sciences. Concern for how the nursing shortage may impact the quality of health care led to the formation of a 13- member task force in July 1986 to study the situation. Mrs. Matheson chaired the committee, which included representatives of government, business, education and consumer interest groups. The Nursing Study Task Force released a report in May 1987 identifying present and projected nursing shortages for the state and recommending strategies to correct the problem. The recommendations focused on retention, continuing education and an increased supply of students. The task force specifically recommended that the state legislature increase appropriations to the nursing schools at Weber State College and the University of Utah. The University Hospital Board resolution noted that Mrs. Matheson " effectively conveyed the seriousness of this shortage to the public and media and... educated the Board of Regents, the business community and the legislature regarding necessary actions to remedy the problem." Mini Utah Open Offers Hot Time for HSC Golfers The mini heat wave didn't wilt the spirits of the Mini Utah Open golf tournament participants. More than 45 teams- Health Sciences Center golfers and their partners- participated Scenery, music, sunshine and conversation are on the July agenda of the Career Development for University Secretaries Committee. Red Butte Gardens in the state arboretum will be the setting for the July 13th meeting 11: 30 a. m.- l p. m. " Getting to Know You" is the theme of the meeting. The red " U" athletic buses will shuttle committee members and guests " All of that is important and necessary, but as I come to campus, I'm always aware that the sign says ' College of Pharmacy'- not ' Intermountain West's Finest Pharmaceutical Research Institute,'" the dean emphasized. " The long- term success of our graduates must be of utmost importance to us." Dr. Wolf believes practicing pharmacists are the link between residents in distant communities- who may be unlikely to grasp how research expertise can better their lives- and the research itself, which provided medications that make lives more productive in the face of illness or chronic disease. " The college must educate and provide highly competent health practitioners; that's the reason for our college's existence. But the mission goes beyond that- to sustain a center of research excellence. The two are complementary; one never can replace the other," he stated. Dr. Wolf became dean and professor of pharmacology and in the mini open June 22, sponsored by University Hospital's Social Activities Committee. First place went to the team of Jim McNamara, Rosalie to Red Butte Gardens beginning at 11: 30 a. m. The buses will have one designated pick- up spot- on the south driveway entrance of the Special Events Center. He continues to be involved in research, serving as coinvestigator on a large research contract for the develop-ment of new anticonvulsant agents which has resulted in 10 promising new drugs now undergoing clinical trials. In 1973- 74, Dr. Wolf received a Senior Fulbright- Hays Fellowship to help establish the first college of pharmacy in Malaysia, where he also provided instruction to students in the new college as well as to pharmacy professionals throughout Southeast Asia. During his affiliation with AACP, Dr. Wolf has served as president, member of the board of directors and representative to the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education, the organization concerned with accreditation of pharmacy colleges in the United States. Robin Kruppa, Donald Kruppa, Terry Hardman and Marius Burke composed one of the teams. The team of Terrie Larsen, Melba Larsen, Larry Williams and Arne Larsen also finished second. Ralph Walgren, Shanna Erickson, Don Dixon and Barbara Flager comprised the final team which tied for second place. Each of the players received a $ 15 gift certificate for Uintah Golf. Four teams tied for third place. They were: 1) Jerry Sheffield, Jeff Burton, Lorin Sheffield and Amy Mower; 2) A1 Tokunaga, Merle Witter, Ed Nakishima and Linda Ryerson; 3) Karen Hillier, Judy Brown, Kevin Hillier and Jeff Gaffey; and 4) Marianne Housley, Coke Sypes, Kent Brown and Tim Branigan. Each player was awarded a $ 5 Uintah Golf gift certificate. Donald Kruppa had the longest drive in the men's division. Lynne Starley was the women's winner for the longest drive. Erwin Bode and Jill Sanders were the male and female players closest to hole # 6. On hole # 9, Don Dixon and Lynne Starley were closest to the hole. Golf balls were awarded as prizes. Drawing winners were: Dick Alexander, George Belsey, Gary Morley, Dana James, Mike Trapletti, Kathy Puluso, Art Swindle, Ann Muhler, Dorothy Hale, Jerry Druce, Colleen Druce, Cathy Kellner, George Kellner and Donna Gaylord. They received $ 5 Uintah Golf gift certificates.
