Construction Phase Begins Southeast of School of Medicine Construction has begun on a new Radiobiology/Large Animal Research Facility building southeast of the School of Medicine, setting the stage for work to begin on the Eccles Genetics Building in 1988. The Radiobiology/ Large Animal Research Facility will house the Division of Radiobiology and four large animal operating rooms. The present Radiobiology Building is located east of the School of Medicine and the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library and houses Department of Energy studies on the long-term effects of low-level radiation. The three- level, $ 2.2 million facility will be constructed south of the present primal Resource Center. Once the new Radiobiology building is complete, the present Radiobiology facility and the kennels will be demolished to clear a site for the Eccles Genetics Building, according to Art Olsen, Campus Planning's project manager for the Health Sciences Center. The kennels will not be rebuilt since the dogs housed there will be moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in September and all projects involving the dogs are nearing completion, according to Glenn Warnick, associate dean of the School of Medicine. Future plans also call for another addition east of the Animal Re-source Center. Plans for the Eccles Genetics Build-ing should be complete by next May. Eccles Genetics will be a seven- floor laboratory building to house the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the George and Dolores Eccles Institute of Human Genetics. Plans include a 200- car parking deck. Hospital Picnic 8 Days Away University Hospital's annual summer picnic is only a few days away. Enter-tainment, activities and two meal times are planned for the August 20 event at Lagoon. Employees will be able to enter the park at 10 a. m.; rides and events will begin at 11 a. m. Kentucky Fried Chicken will be catering the picnic. This year's menu is: a choice of ribs OR fried chicken OR hot dogs, along with baked beans, com on the cob and coleslaw. Soft drinks and iced tea will be provided. Lunch will be served from 11 a. m. to I p. m., and dinner is scheduled from 4- 8 p. m. Both meals will be served outside, east of the Davis Pavilion near the meadow area, where all activities and entertainment are scheduled. EVENTS Activites include: • Gunny sack races will be open to two age groups: 4- 7 and 8- 12. Races will be run from 11 a. m. to noon and again from 5- 6 p. m. • A scavenger hunt will be held from II a. m. to 1 p. m. and again from 4- 7 p. m. Instructions and the list will be given out in the Davis Pavilion. • A watermelon eating contest will be held at 7 p. m outside the Davis Pavilion. There are three age groups: 4- 7, 8- 12 and 12 and older. • The " Dunk- a- Director" booth will begin at 11 a. m. near the Davis Pavilion. A different administrator or director will be scheduled in the dunking tank each half hour. It'll cost you 50 cents for two balls to try to dunk these good sports. All funds raised will go to one of the Hospital's pediatrics programs. • The Fuse, a local Top 40 band, will play in the Davis Pavilion from 5: 30 to 7: 30 p. m. TICKETS Employees will receive tickets from their service directors the week of the picnic. Hospital employees will receive free entrance passes and meal tickets for themselves and immediate family members, including a spouse, sons and daughters, stepchildren and children of whom they are legal guardians ( children up to the age of 23 who are full- time time students and live at home also are eligible). Unmarried employees will receive tickets for one guest. In addition, each employee will receive one free parking pass and free swimming passes and discount coupons, as requested. Eligibility for free all- day ride passes is based on employment status. The passes will be honored by Lagoon on August 20 only. No alternate passes are available this year. MORE TICKETS? Employees who wish to purchase discount ride passes for additional family members and guests may do so at the Hospital Cashier's Office beginning Wednesday, August 12. The tickets will be sold through the day of the picnic. Cost is $ 9.37, and no refunds will be available. ( The discount ride passes must be purchased at the Hospital; they will not be available for sale at Lagoon.) Passes for toddlers ( ages 14) and senior citizens ( over 65) cost $ 6.95. Additional meal tickets also will be available for sale at Lagoon only. Meal tickets will be sold for $ 2.50 each outside the Davis Pavilion between 10- 11 a. m. and between 2: 30- 4 p. m. Erik Stensaas Hallside Features Works of Erik Stensaas This month's Hallside Gallery artist is Erik Stensaas of Salt Lake City. A senior at Rowland Hall- St. Mark's School, Erik takes art classes at school and private lessons with local artist Earl Jones. This public exhibit is the first for Erik, son of Larry J. Stensaas, Ph. D., professor of physiology, and Suzanne Stensaas, Ph. D., assistant professor of pathology. Erik's favorite media are pen and ink and oil, although he has experimented with watercolor, charcoal, ceramics and monoprints. He plans a career in art. Skiing, mountain biking, skateboarding and backpacking are among his other interests. The pieces in the exhibit are available for sale; see Julian Maack for details. The Hallside Gallery is located in room AC113 in the School of Medicine. The gallery is open from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m. Monday through Friday. University HSC, Veterinarians Launch Pet Care Program If your pet dog or cat suddenly becomes very ill or is severly injured, your veterinarian may use the sophisticated facilities and staff of the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. The Utah Veterinary Medical Association and the University Health Sciences Center have joined forces to treat difficult or unusual veterinary medical cases involving pets, normally dogs and cats. " The Pet Critical Care Program makes the resources of the University and its staff available to assist in exceptional veterinary medical cases without any additional charges to animal's owner from the University," according to Richard White, D. V. M., president of the Utah Veterinary Medical Association. " Recendy, for example, a CAT- scan performed at the University, appropri-ately, on a pet cat, was important in diagnosing the animal's recurring seizures," Dr. White says. • « " This is not a research program. Cats and dogs treated in the Pet Critical Care Program will be treated with the same procedures and technologies used for humans. This make the ' high technology' of the University Health Sciences Center available to the state's veterinarians in treating difficult cases involving pets," according to the Utah veterinarian leader. University physicians will be donating their time in assisting the veterinarians in treating the pets, and the University Health Sciences Center will charge only its out- of- pocket costs. It is estimated that $ 3,000- 4,000 will cover the cost of the eight to 10 cases expected to be referred each year. To pay these costs, the Utah Veterinary Medical Association and the University Health Sciences Center have established a Pet Critical Care Fund. " We expect memorial gifts and donations from pet owners, veterinarians, physicians and others interested in animal welfare to fund the program," Dr. White says. Contributions can be sent to the Pet Critical Care Fund, University of Utah Development Office, 306 Park Building.
