Volume2/1989_February22UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER February 22, 1989 Dee Boone is Tops in February Diane "Dee" Boone, environmental services, has kept University Hospital's Surgical Intensive Care Unit spic and span for more than a year now. And in the process, she's also won the hearts of the unit's nurses, physicians and patients. The hospital has named her Employee- of-the-Month for February'. Dee joined the U. Hospital staff only two years ago, and for the first year, she worked on 5 North. The toughest part of her job in SICU, she says, is not the work itself, but getting used to some of the problems with which SICU patients must deal. "I get emotional sometimes," Dee said. "I'm pretty sensitive to the pain some of the patients face, but the work here is fascinating." Dee has had numerous experiences that stand out in her mind- many of them involve patients who have under-gone heart transplants. "I learned all about Alaska from one patient who lived there," she said. "He came for a heart transplant and we became friends. He said he couldn't wait to hear my cheery voice and always thanked me for cleaning his area." Another patient Dee befriended came from Elko and was hospitalized with leukemia. "He and his wife became good friends of mine," she said. "He often got depressed and I tried to cheer him up." The patient left the hospital doing well and now sends Dee cards or stops in to say hello to her when he's around. "Dee's natural openness, warmth and dedication to doing the best she can has earned her not only the respect of all her co-workers, but the title of "friend,'" said Ray Hagen, director of Environmental Services. "Dee was Volunteers Needed Salt Lake City has been chosen as the kick-off city for the 1989 national tour of the the AIDS "Names Project Quilt, "which will be displayed March 16-19 at the Salt Palace. This memorial quilt is a reminder of lives lost to AIDS. Each panel represents a person who has died of the disease. Volunteers are needed to work on publicity, put the quilt in place, entertain the staff touring with the quilt, and serve as monitors and as guides for people looking for specific panels. Volunteers should call the People with AIDS Coalition of Utah at 359-5555. Dee and her husband, Gary- a descendant of the famous Daniel Boone- have a daughter, 21, and a son, 18. They own a cabin in the Duchesne area and enjoy camping, fishing and target-shooting with the Boone family's black- powder pistol and rifle. As Employee-of-the-Month, Dee will be treated to lunch with Hospital Administrator George Belsey. She also will receive a certificate and a $50 U. S. savings bond. Rec Therapists Say "Thanks" The recreational therapists of University Hospital's rehabilitation and psychiatric units thank the more than 400 people who bought carnations for Valentine's Day. Money from the sale will be used by the therapists to support their patient activities. In memorium Workshop for Married Couples Irfan Anwar, 28, an employee of University Hospital's Nutrition Care Services, died of natural causes on January 26, 1989. Irfan Anwar A native of Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Irfan came to the United States last year to attend school at the University of Utah. He began working for Nutrition Care Services last May. "Irfan was a kind, caring man," said his manager Gwen Bartschi, R.D., C.D. "On several occasions, patients expressed their thanks for the way he responded to their needs. Recently, one of them wrote this note on an NCS patient survey sheet: 'Irfan is great. He takes a lot of care. He pays a lot of attention to me and my well- being as a patient. He always gives me a smile."' "Irfan was well thought of by the hospital staff," Ms. Bartschi continued. "People from many departments have taken time to express their sorrow and their concern for his family." Irfan is survived by his wife, Bushra, and their son, Andrew, both of whom live in Salt Lake City, and his parents, who live in Pakistan. U of U Health Sciences Center's married couples who want to enhance their communication and relationship skills are invited to participate in a 10- week U of U Counseling Center study beginning the week of March 27-30. Participants will be asked to make a 10-minute audio recording of a relationship issue and complete four questionnaires during a two- hour orientation meeting. The orientations are scheduled in the Student Services Building (SSB) and are offered four different evenings: Monday, March 6 at 6 p.m. in room 490 SSB, Tuesday, March 7 at 6 p.m. in room 390 SSB, Wednesday, March 8 at 6 p.m. in room 490 SSB, and Thursday, March 9 at 7: 30 p. m. in room 490 SSB. Couples need only participate in one of these meetings. The week after the couples attend the orientation, they will be notified of their assignment in one of two workshops- couples communication or relationship enhancement- a 10- week commitment on a particular week night for two hours each week. Anatomy of a Laugh Your whole body gets a kick out of a good chuckle. Here's what happens when you laugh, according to research. • Your heart and lungs are stimulated. • Your heart beats faster and your blood pressure rises temporarily. • Your body releases endorphins-your own natural painkillers and you produce more immune cells. • You burn 78 times as many calories as you would in a resting state. • Your diaphragm, facial muscles and internal organs all get bounced around in an " internal jogging." After you laugh, your muscles and arteries relax. That's great for easing pain. Also, your blood pressure lowers and your pulse drops below normal. He plans to resume his studies when he returns from a mission for the LDS Church in Manchester, England. David's paintings have been displayed at The Salt Lake Art Center; the Utah State Fair; The All- State Art Show in Springville, Utah; The Utah Pageant of the Arts in American Fork, Utah; and at The Marble House Gallery in Salt Lake City.
