Volume2/1989_August30UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER 1989 UH Utah Open: Par Excellence The recent University Hospital Utah Open was both an athletic and fund-raising success, according to Dick Alexander, tournament director. The golf tournament, which netted $97,000 for the hospital's endowment in 1988, brought in about the same amount this year. The 9-year old tournament improves each year, Mr. Alexander says. In the first few years, players were mostly local; however, this year, more than 70 percent of the players were from out of state. "It gets more fun every year because of the player response," Mr. Alexander commented. He says the Utah Open is about the third largest state open in the country, in terms of the size of the purse and the quality of players. On Sunday, a record crowd of nearly 10,000 was on hand at Willow Creek Country Club to watch Neal Lancaster, Smithfield, N.C., win the $20,000 first place purse with a score of 203 (13 under par). The week-long event, which ran from Aug. 14-20, included qualifying rounds on Monday, Pro-Am play Tuesday through Thursday and the championship round Friday through Sunday. The field of 163 golfers included several PGA players, the champions of four other state opens, a number of celebrities and last year's Utah Open winner, Jay Don Blake. Two doctors from University Hospital, Scott Linscott, M.D., and Kurt Bernhisel, M.D., also qualified for the championship rounds. "This is the largest special event the hospital does," Mr. Alexander said, adding that it involves more than 165 volunteers who work nearly year-round. Many of those volunteers come Mr. Alexander also got a big hand this year from Cynthia Faircloth, administration, who served as tournament secretary and Steve Thiese, ophthalmology, who worked as a tournament intern. This year, 43 corporate sponsors participated in the Utah Open. Among them were American Express, Dr. Pepper, KSTU- Channel 13, the Utah Jazz and Gus Paulos Chevrolet. Mr. Alexander said one of the highlights of the week's activities was seeing Tim Angus, a paraplegic and former U of U rehab patient, play in the Pro Ams. That's what this event is all about, Mr. Alexander said, explaining that the money raised benefits patient care. Meanwhile in Midway... As qualifying rounds for the Utah Open began in Sandy, the Utah Women's Health Open was under way at Wasatch State Park Golf Course in Midway. More than 50 women participated in the event, sponsored by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the U School of Medicine. According to Frances Gillmor, development director for the department, the day's event raised more than $12,000, which will go toward research in women's health issues. The Midway event served as the women's portion of the Utah Open. This is the first year the 4-year old tournament has been affiliated with Utah Open. The women's events included a mixed scramble and a championship. The winners in the competitive division were Betty Logefiel, Sharon Eastman, Sue Fister and Lauri Wolfe. In addition to the tournament, the day's events included two lectures about women's health issues and life planning. Rain? No Big Deal! Not even a surprise cold front could dampen spirits at the annual University Hospital picnic held last Thursday at Hogle Zoo. Employees and their families who braved the rain and cool temperatures enjoyed zoo burgers, hotdogs, bottomless drinks and a wonderful day with the animals. Group Promotes Cycling at UHSC Form of recreation, mode of transportation or exercise sensation- the bicycle is something you're going to hear a lot more about in coming months at the U of U Health Sciences Center. Earlier this year, the Operating Room Bicycle Access Committee (ORBAC) was formed to look into bicycle issues at the hospital. The group was created when an operating room employee who had been parking his bicycle in the unit claimed there was nowhere else to leave the bike. ORBAC conducted a study in July and found a few more bicycles on upper campus than actual bike rack spaces. Since that study, however, 20 new racks have been installed. But ORBAC is interested in more than just parking spaces. Members of ORBAC are excited about biking and want to spread their enthusiasm throughout the health sciences center. Recently, ORBAC conducted a survey of operating room employees to get a feel for staff attitudes concerning cycling. Dana Robey, R.N., Fund-raiser for Cerebral Palsy United Cerebral Palsy of Utah is holding a fund-raiser Sept. 9 at the Red Lion Hotel. The $100 ticket price includes dinner and dancing to the Joe Muscolino quintet. Frank Layden of the Utah Jazz will serve as master of ceremonies. To Stop Smoking The Cancer Information Service of Utah (CIS), a public service of University Hospital and the hospital-based Utah Regional Cancer Center, has programs to help you stop smoking. "Everyone has different problems and we offer counseling on an individual basis," says Kathryn Manning, R.T.T., CIS program coordinator. For more information, call x5887. who headed the ORBAC project, says the results are encouraging. More than three- fourths of the respondents own bicycles, Mr. Robey said. The survey also found that 38 percent of the respondents ride to work and more than half say they would like to ride to work. Mr. Robey believes the operating room employees are not unique and that cycling is a topic of interest to employees throughout the center. Plans are now under way to have ORBAC absorbed by the Social Activities Committee later this fall. Health sciences employees can benefit from greater bicycle awareness, Mr. Robey says. He points to a number of benefits increased bicycle ridership will bring to the health sciences center. Not only do cyclists receive cardiovascular exercise from riding, they also reap mental rewards, Mr. Robey explains. Additionally, the university saves money by not having to provide as many automobile parking spaces. Also, cyclists do not pollute the environment. Through the Social Activities Committee, Mr. Robey hopes to improve the safety of bicycle routes leading to the center, as well as Dana Robey educate employees about the health benefits of pedaling to work. Cam Arrington, administrative services, says he supports Mr. Robey's efforts and says there are tentative plans to put a limited number of bicycle racks in the north parking terrace.
