Volume5/2005_February07February 7, 2005 PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Donor Family, Recipient Thank U Hospital for Commitment to Organ Donation Nine-year old kidney transplant recipient Kalee Glennon and the family of the late Kassandra "KayCee" Nelson recognized nursing staff from the SICU, NCC, and OR last week at U Hospital for their commitment to organ donation. In 2004, the UH had a 95 percent consent rate- the highest in the Intermountain West- for medically eligible organ donors. The national average for hospitals is 50 percent and the state average is about 70 percent. "Our nurses, social workers, and other staff have created a compassionate and caring environment where families can understand the value of organ donation both to the recipients who wait and to the donor families themselves as they search for comfort in the midst of their great tragedy," said Kim Phillips, R.N., M.S.N., manager of U Hospital's Solid Organ Transplant Program. The Glennon and Nelson families, representatives from Intermountain Donor Services, and the hospital's Solid Organ Transplant Program spoke at the event. Ash Wednesday Service Planned Ash Wednesday Mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the UH Hope Chapel. Father Stan Herba will lead services. Weekly services include Catholic Communion Services on Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. in the Hope Chapel and LDS Sacrament Services on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in the Hope Chapel and HCH Chapel. SICU, NCC, and the OR staff were thanked at last week's event in the Hope Chapel for their compassion and commitment to patients and families faced with the decision of organ and tissue donation. Photographers Ready to Capture 'A Day in the Life of Nursing' On Tuesday, Feb. 15, a team of professional photographers will blanket University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics for 24 hours to capture images of what a typical day is like for nursing staff. The project is being coordinated by the U's Nursing Retention Council and the photographs will be used in a variety of ways to help promote National Nursing Week in May. While thousands of photographs will be taken of nurses that day, no image will be used for any promotional purpose without the written consent of the person photographed. The photographers will be escorted by public affairs and nursing representatives to ensure that proper privacy disclosure forms are completed. Prior to Feb. 15, fliers detailing what nurses and patients should expect during the photo shoot will be distributed to areas photographers will visit. Employee Forums Begin Wednesday This Wednesday begins a series of one- hour employee forums with U Hospitals & Clinics administrators giving updates on the organization's goals, World Class U, and what lies ahead in 2005. Faculty News Mark B. Bromberg, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurology, has been selected as the 2005 University of Utah Medical Group (UUMG) Fellow. In this role, Bromberg will participate in the David Eccles School of Business Physician Executives Course, UUMG leadership opportunities, and various board and executive committees. He also plans to complete a project exploring "The State of Academic Neurology and Optimizing Neurology's Position in the Clinical Neurosciences Center." Elizabeth Frank, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology and medical director of ARUP's Analytic Biochemistry Laboratory, has been elected chair of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry's (AACC) Rocky Mountain Section and to the board of directors for the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC). The AACC's Rocky Mountain Section is comprised of members from Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, and parts of Canada. As section chair, Frank will coordinate an organization meeting in Salt Lake City and host the section's business meeting at AACC's annual gathering in Orlando in July. Frank will serve for five years on the ABCC board of directors participating in the organization's Clinical Chemistry Exam Committee and Continuing Education Committee. Cancer Camp Seeks Volunteers Camp Hobe is seeking volunteers for its summer week-long and day camps for children with cancer. Volunteers are needed to be cabin counselors, activity directors, kitchen staff, medical staff, and lifeguards. The camp, also open to siblings of kids with cancer, is held at Settlement Canyon, 30 minutes west of Salt Lake City from June 4- 10 (Kids Week), June 12- 17 (Teen Week), and June 5- 6 (Day Camp). PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER Hospital Volunteers Host Sale on Bridge The U Hospital Volunteers Office is hosting a bath-and- beauty sale on Wednesday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on the hospital's first-floor bridge. Items will include soaps, bubble bath, aroma oils, and other products. A portion of the proceeds will help patient- care needs. Screenings Offered at UH for Heart Day Before giving your heart away on Valentine's Day, employees and patients are invited to get heart checkups on Feb. 14, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., on U Hospital's first-floor bridge. The UH heart failure/transplant group will host the health screening and informational display in connection with National Heart Failure Awareness Week, Feb. 13-19. The booth will include blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, snacks, and information on heart failure and transplant. The "Yes! Lecture Looks at Wireless Devices Wednesday's Library and Information Technology Forum will focus on cellular and wireless mobile devices . at the 12:05 p.m. lecture in Classroom C, SOM. For more information go to http://medlib.med.utah.edu/or/lift/lift.php. In Memoriam University Hospital's biomedical office lost two employees last month. Biomedical Equipment Techni-cians Lyle R. Stevens and Jay L. Marsh both battled cancer. Stevens, 54, died Jan. 24. Born in Salt Lake City and raised in California, Stevens joined U Hospital's biomedical office nearly 30 years ago. He was responsible for repairing operating room equipment, including electrical surgical devices, ventilators, and defibrillators. Marsh, 60, died Jan. 26. A Salt Lake City native, Marsh joined U Hospital's biomedical office in 1988. He was responsible for repairing Labor and Delivery monitor equipment, pulmonary equipment, and infusion pumps.
