Volume5/2004_May17May 17, 2004 PULSE A Salute to Utah Nurses Hats off to Utah's nurses and nurse educators- all 300 of them- who were recognized for their contributions to the profession at the ninth "Honors for Nursing" ceremony. The YWCA received the Dare to Care Award for its women's health and safety programs during the ceremony on May 5. Most of the honorees, their nominators, and preceptors- nurses and teachers who volunteer their time to give U nursing students expert clinical supervision- were among those who attended. Sponsored by the U College of Nursing and the college's alumni association, the awards are presented annually in Continued on back UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Marion Bradford Bart Chournos Linda Schmidt HSC Trio Win University Presidential Staff Awards Congratulations to Marion Bradford, UH case manager; Bart Chournos, R.N., NBICU and AirMed; and Linda Schmidt, senior research specialist in the Department of Dermatology, who have been named 2004 Presidential Staff Award winners. They join three other U employees selected from 91 nominees. Awardees will receive a $3,000 honorarium and a plaque at a special luncheon next month at the University president's residence. Other winners are Ann Penman-Morgan, public safety; Carlyle Clarke, campus purchasing; and Michael D. Anderson, academic computing services. UH Celebrates Hospital Week University Hospitals & Clinics celebrated National Hospital Week from May 10-15 with treats, posters, and a Health, Wellness, & Info Fair. Each hospital inpatient unit and community clinic received a poster with a thank-you note from UH board of directors and administrators, and comments of appreciation from patients who answered satisfaction surveys. Patient comments included: "The doctors and nurses were excellent," " You have a great staff," " Best care one could want," and "I would recommend it to anyone." Nurses Chosen for Excellent Care Nurses Week, May 6-12, gave U Hospitals & Clinics the chance to honor nurses who consistently provide outstanding patient care. Jadie Barrie, R.N., chief nursing officer, gave the Excellence in Nursing Award to nurses nominated by their peers and unit managers. The award came with a gift certificate. Iraq Book Drive a Ton of Success A million thanks- or in this case, a ton- to everyone who donated medical books and journals for Iraqi students. HSC students, faculty, and staff donated more than 2,200 books and journals weighing 1.5 tons- a lot more than expected and budgeted for mailing. Funds from the Associated Students of the University of Utah covered only half of the $1,093 mailing cost, so organizers of the Iraq Book Drive are seeking donations to cover the other half. Anybody interested in helping out, please call the SOM Dean's Office, 581-7201. Honors for Nursing continued conjunction with National Nurses Week to honor outstanding nurses, nurse educators, and organizations, and also to raise funds for nursing scholarships. The program raised more than $ 6,000 this year. The event was hosted by Ruth Todd, anchor for ABC 4 News, and sponsored by University Hospitals & Clinics, Intermountain Health Care, St. Mark's Hospital, Pioneer Valley Hospital, and Huntsman Cancer Hospital. Sleep- Wake Center Earns Re-Accreditation U Hospital's Sleep-Wake Center has earned a five- year re- accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. It's the center's third continuous accreditation. Official results arrived last month and set the center apart as one of three accredited services in Utah. It's the only sleep center in the Intermountain West with a multi-disciplinary team that treats more than 80 sleep disorders. Physicians and clinical staff include specialists in pulmonary medicine, neurology, and psychiatry. The center, which includes a six bed evaluation area, is located in Research Park at 375 Chipeta Way. Take Virtual Tour of HSC Construction The ITS Web Resource Center has launched a new Web site showcasing the latest construction at the Health Sciences Center. The site, uuhsc.utah.edu/virtualtour, gives information about facilities under construction, floor plans, and computer- simulated tours of the buildings. The virtual tours feature the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, the Orthopedic Center, the Emma Eccles Jones Medical Research Building, the Health Sciences Education Building, and the John A. Moran Eye Center. Information and footage of the completed Eccles Critical Care Pavilion also are on the new Web site. National Hospital Week continued information and services available at the U and in the community. Approximately 7,000 chocolate-covered strawberries were given to employees and visitors at the event. Thanks to members of the UH Social Activities Committee for organizing and volunteering at the event.
