Early Resurfacing work on UH's entrance road that circles near the front doors was completed more than a week early and was scheduled to reopen as early as today. See back for more on HSC construction. 9/ 11: A Time to Remember The hospital's Hope Chapel will be open Thursday, 7 a. m.- 5 p. m., for staff, patients, and visitors to remem-ber those who died in the terror strikes of Sept. 11, 2001. A short video will be presented at 10 a. m., noon, and 2 p. m., and reflection note cards and patriotic lapel pins will be available. Caring Connections will host the third annual Grief Awareness Day that evening from 7- 8 p. m. on the plaza south of the College of Nursing. A brief program will precede a candle- lighting ceremony. Refreshments will be served. Program Makes Organ Donation Easier People who need a kidney transplant but don't have a living donor usually spend a long time on the national waiting list. A new program that helps Utahns donate anonymously aims to reduce, if not eliminate, the long wait. The Anonymous Living Donor Program, a project involving Intermountain Donor Services, UH, and LDS Hospital, has been instrumental in helping people donate organs to patients who don't have a living donor available. U Hospital's Kim Phillips, R. N., said Utah donor programs, such as the YesUtah donor registry, have been recognized nationally. " Ultimately, we want to reduce or eliminate the waiting list here," said Phillips, manager of the hospital's Solid Organ Transplant Programs. To make the anonymous donor program better and to develop support options and benefits, Phillips would like to hear from employees who have made a kidney dona-tion. Burn Unit PSA Airs on Local Stations If you can't sleep, turn on the TV and you may catch the public service announcement produced by U Hospital's Intermountain Burn Center. Beginning last week KSL, KTVX, KUTV, and KSTU started showing the 30- second spot during their day, evening, and late-night programming. The segment gives several burn safety reminders, such as: lowering the temperature of home water heaters to 120 degrees; using the backburners and turning pot handles inward when cooking; and not leaving children alone in the bathroom or near portable appliances. The PSA is scheduled to run from 16 weeks to a year. Photographer Sebastiao Salgado to Discuss Globalism at Tanner Lecture The U's 2003 Tanner Lecture on Human Values will feature internationally renowned photographer, econo-mist, and activist Sebastiao Salgado. Scheduled for Sept. 23, at 8 p. m., in Gardner Hall, Salgado's lecture will discuss Art, Globalism, and Cultural Instability. He is recognized for his photographs documenting famine, manual labor, and migrations of displaced people around the world. Panel discussions and exhibits also will be offered in conjunction with the event, which is free and open to the public. The lectures were founded by Obert C. Tanner, scholar, philanthropist, and founder of the O. C. Tanner Company. Nine educational institutions besides the U host the lectures: Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Michigan, Berkeley, and Stanford. Construction Update Work Limits South Terrace Road Utility work has closed the road between the Biomedical Polymers Research Building ( BPRB) and the South Parking Terrace. Crews anticipate construc-tion to be completed Sept. 15. Vehicle, pedestrian, and delivery traffic will be able to access BPRB and the South Parking Terrace from the south. Traffic to buildings north of the Eccles Genetics building will be routed to the fire lane to the north. Paving Closes ' A' Stalls Near Dumke Road construction has closed approximately 100 A' parking stalls near the Dumke Building. Traffic on East Medical Drive between the Dumke Building and Huntsman Cancer Institute will be restricted to one lane during the resurfacing, which will last until Sept. 18. Free Kids' Fair Set for Saturday Kids and parents are invited to go " Under the Big Top," Saturday at U Hospital & Clinics' annual kids' fair. The free event, scheduled from 9 a. m.- l p. m., will be held on the lawn of the U Neuropsychiatric Institute in Research Park, 501 Chipeta Way. The fair will feature circus entertainment and health information. An AirMed helicopter and fire and police equipment also will be on display. Free hotdogs, drinks, cotton candy, and other treats will be given away and the first 500 kids at the fair will receive a free T- shirt. For more information, call 583- 2500. Art Cases Show Nyberg Paintings The work of John Nyberg is on display in the hospital's second- floor art cases through October. Nyberg, a former Salt Lake City resident, is recognized nationally for his paintings. Hospital Tee Time Golf Scramble Gets Employees on Course for Fun, Prizes Employees went driving, chipping, and putting last month at UH's annual Tee Time Golf Tournament. Coming in with the day's best round at 6 under par was the team of Mary Herman, Melanie Vandelden, Bill Dennis, and Jeff Heninger. Two teams tied for second place at 4 under par. Eiko Nagata, Stephanie Nakamura, Tim Branigan, and Al Tokunaga tied with Brenda Densley, Deb Hanson, Bryan Densley, and Bruce Neilson. The tournament was played in a scramble format. Individual honors went to Janet Papastamos and Ted Taylor for the longest drive; Tim Branigan for closest to the pin on hole six; and Teresa Meidlinger and Ross Milley for closest to the pin on hole nine. Joan Benson, Laurie Moyer- Mileur, Wayne Askew, and Thunder Jalili received special recognition for taking the most swings to complete the round. Prizes included gift certificates and Nokia 6800 cell phones with digital cameras. Thanks to Al Tokunaga and Jeanne Henson for organizing the event.
