Volume5/2002_May20May 20, 2002 PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Jadie Barrie Joins UH Admin Team Jadie Barrie, R.N., M.S.N., has been named interim associate administrator of patient care services for inpatient services and chief nursing officer at University Hospitals & Jadie Barrie Clinics. She has been the emergency and trauma services service director. " Jadie is well qualified for this position and I am pleased that she will join our administration team," said UH Executive Director Rick Fullmer. Barrie will be responsible for University Hospital patient services areas including Outpatient Services, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Moran Eye Center. Non- clinical services functions will now report to Fullmer. Barrie was CNO/ Vice President of Clinical Services and interim CEO at Pioneer Valley Hospital before joining U Hospital in 1999. According to Fullmer, she has excelled in her assignments here, which have included co- chairing the SMART Committee project. Mario Capecchi Receives Nation's Top Science Award Mario R. Capecchi, Ph. D., distinguished professor of human genet-ics and biology, has been selected to receive the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest award Mario R. Capecchi for lifetime achievement in fields of scientific research. Fourteen scientists and one engineer were named by President Bush to receive awards, which will be pre-sented later in Washington, D. C. The recognition honors Capecchi's work using gene targeting methods in mice to study and change genes in a living organism. In a news release, the National Science Foundation ( NSF) said his new genetic tools " revolutionized the study of mammalian genetics and provided important new models for human genetic diseases." Capecchi has been a professor of human genetics at the U since 1973. Patients Compliment Hospital Staff U Hospital Executive Director Rick Fullmer delivered posters featuring compliments from patients to hospital patient areas during last week's activities for National Hospital Week. The comments were taken from patient satisfaction surveys received in the last year. Comments included: " Each of my caregivers was terrific." " The house cleaning people were very nice and did a good job." " All the nurses were very caring and conscientious." Performance Monitoring and Improvement's Mo Mulligan, J. D., R. N., and Kevin Jones, compiled the comments and helped deliver the posters, which were created by Jackie McCowen, Medical Graphics and Photography. Posters are also on display in the hospital's lobby and at the community clinics. More than 5,000 floats were given to employees, including the night shift. Faculty News Carl T. Wittwer, M. D., Ph. D., professor of pathol-ogy, was honored with the annual Pathfinder Award of the Utah Engineering Experiment Station at a March conference in Salt Lake City. Wittwer was recognized for helping develop and commercialize rapid DNA analysis technology to test the effective-ness of drugs in treating various strains of H IV and to detect biological weapons, including anthrax bacteria. Eric Swanson, M. D., AirMed medical director and assistant professor of emergency medicine, received the Medical Director of the Year award from the Air Medical Physician Association ( AMPA) on April 14 at the international organization's pre- conference in Las Vegas. The annual award recognizes a medical director's contributions to medical education, quality of care, leadership, and personal involvement in the program. Also in Las Vegas, Swanson was awarded first and second place for research he presented at the Critical Care Transport Medicine Conference. Library Plans ResearchSoft Instruction Join Randy Wright, an ISI ResearchSoft representa-tive, for a hands- on class on EndNote, a bibliographic management software tool. The class will be held May 23 from 9- 11 a. m. at the Eccles Health Sciences Library in the Large PC Lab on the lower level. Wright will review how to search bibliographic databases on the Internet, organize references and create one- step bibliographies in conjunction with a word processor. There will be time for questions and hands- on practice. No fee is required, but participants must register by calling Jeanne Le Ber, x5- 6744 or emailing her jeannele@ lib. med. utah. edu. ARUP Study Needs Young Volunteers ARUP Laboratories is looking for healthy young people, ages 7- 17, to participate in a study involving a health questionnaire, a physical examination, and collec-tion of blood and urine samples. The study will take about one hour, and the physical examination results may be used for school, sports or scouting activities.
