Volume5/1991_September12PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Sept. 12,1991 Health Care Education Celebrates This Week National Health Care Education and Training Week is under way, and to help recognize the week- long celebration, the cafeteria will be lined with booths and displays from the various Medical Center departments in honor of the more than 200 employees who are directly involved with health care education. The annual event is designed to increase awareness of health care education and training throughout University Medical Center. Numerous departments will have booths, among them Nursing, Pharmacy, Central Distribution, Medical Records, Respiratory Care, Environmental Services and the Ambulatory Clinics. Also on display is a preview for a new video on infectious diseases, produced by the Nursing Education Department and Hospital Epidemiology. The local theme for this year's National Health Care Education Week is " Education is the Wind Beneath Your Wings," proposed by the Education Council and its co- chairs Diane Cunningham, R. N., director of Nursing/ Education, and Bill Duncan, Personnel employee relations manager. The logo was designed by Hector Ahumada, Radiology, and Cathy Olsen, Nursing Education. Rulers with this year's logo will be distributed to all employees in the Medical Center. U Trustees Okay UTA Passes For Employees The University of Utah Board of Trustees announced Monday, Sept. 9, their approval to grant all University of Utah faculty, staff and students free bus passes. The program will be on a one-year trial basis, costing the University approximately $ 512,000. The passes will provide all faculty, staff and students with free service along any of UTA's routes, with the exception of travel to the ski resorts, which will be offered at half price. University of Utah UTA users will be issued a sticker, which attaches to a University I. D. card. Faculty and staff receive an annual sticker, while students receive a quarterly sticker. Hospice " Caring" Convention At SLCC Hospice of Utah is sponsoring a convention with the theme of " Knowing, Caring and Being," Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Rampton Technology Auditorium on the campus of Salt Lake Community College. Kitty Kotchian Smith, BSN, RN, will be featured. Smith, a nationally known speaker in the areas of pain management, hospice, bereavement and humor, will offer three separate presentations; " Being Present- The Key to Intuitive Care," " Hospice- Knowing, Caring and Being Attitudes" and " Laughter and Tears." The conference will run from 8 a. m.~ 4: 15 p. m. and the cost is $ 40 per person. One- Up, One- Down Tennis Tournament The University Hospital Tennis Tournament under way this week is a tremendous success, but the best is yet to come. On Friday, Sept. 13, the tourna-ment committee, along with the help of Susan Binch, Rehab, will sponsor a one- up, one- down tournament. The competition involves one wheelchair player and one standing player competing on a doubles team against another one- up, one- down team. If you are interested in competing with a wheelchair participant call Susan at xl- 2176. There is no cost! Anxiety Sufferers: U Medical Study Offered Persons with anxiety disorders are being sought for treatment- oriented research at the Mood Disorders Clinic in the University of Utah medical school's Department of Psychiatry. The clinic was established nine years ago to evaluate new medications not yet available to the public. According to Frederick W. Reimherr, M. D., assistant professor of psychiatry and clinic director, the study will use medications to treat the symptoms of anxiety. There are different kinds of anxiety disorders, including panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorders and generalized anxiety; this particular study will focus on Gener-alized Anxiety Disorder ( GAD), Dr. Reimherr said. GAD sufferers experience excessive worries and fears that often are not grounded in reality. An example would be a person who worries constantly about being fired from his or her job, without real reasons for those concerns. People with GAD worry persistently, they can be irriatable and " keyed up" and have trouble falling asleep. Some GAD sufferers have problems with concentration. In addition, GAD sufferers can experience a number of physical symptoms. Some are troubled by shortness of breath, rapid heart rate or dizziness. Others sweat excessively, have dry mouth, frequent urination, nausea or diarrhea. They can be bothered by sore and tense muscles, restlessness, trembling and fatigue. Individuals with a substance abuse problem in the past six months do not qualify as study participants. Persons with heart disease, seizures, diabetes or an illness that interferes with metabolism, i. e., liver damage, also cannot be accepted as study candidates. The clinic cannot accept women who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant during the study period. Candidates for the program who currently may be taking tranquilizers, anti- depresants or other medications for emotional disorders, may be asked to discontinue the medication prior to attending the clinic. Printed on Recycled Paper Festival And Harvest Sale At Red Butte The third annual Autumn Festival and Harvest Sale at Red Butte Gardens will take place Saturday, Sept. 21, from 3 - 6 p. m. The harvest sale will feature continuous live music, craft demon-strations and sales, plant sales, a garden design clinic, guided tours of mountain trails and a children's country fair and storytelling. Medical Terminology Course Offered University Medical Center is offering a 12- week course in Medical Terminology, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 25. The course will meet one day a week, from 4- - 6 p. m. Course instructor is Xydell Hobbs, manager of Medical Records. It's scheduled to run through Dec. 11, after which all participants receive a certificate of completion.
