Contact Volunteer Services, xl- 2278 for more information. • Krueger Receives National ' Lifetime Achievement Award' Gerald G. Krueger, M. D., professor of internal medicine in the Division of Dermatology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, received a " Lifetime Achieve-ment Award" from the National Psoriasis Foundation ( NPF) Dec. 4, during the annual meeting of the Ameri-can Academy of Dermatology in Washington, D. C. The NPF honored Krueger; Gerald D. Weinstein, M. D., University of California, Irvine; and John1 J. Voorhees, M. D., University of Michigan, for their pioneering work in psoriasis research. Krueger has been on NPF's medical advisory board since 1985 and recently was named chair. The three recipients were instrumental in broadening the focus of NPF from one oriented solely to patient education to include research as well. Their vision that psoriasis, one of the most common skin diseases, is inherited, resulted in the idea of a gene bank for psoriasis patients. Research by Krueger at the Utah medical school demon-strated that in psoriasis, both involved and uninvolved sites on the skin carried the ability to express the disease. This pivotal observation repudiated the assumption that normal- appearing skin was normal. This same work showed that an intact, normally functioning immune system is necessary for psoriasis to develop, but inflam-matory cells must be present for the disease to appear. This finding, which has resulted in better treatments for the disease, set research on a different track from the previous thinking that the disease was caused by production of excess skin cells. Krueger holds a medical degree from Loma Linda University of Medicine, Loma Linda, California, and is board- certified in dermatology. He joined the U faculty in 1972 and served as chief of the Division of Dermatology from 1972- 1987. • Printed on Recycled Paper Bringing Love and ' Warmth' to UH John Denlinger, left, his daughter Cyd, center, and granddaughter Kelly Schulte delivered more than 70 crib- size quilts to University Hospital last week. This is the fifteenth year the family has purchased quilts from the Festival of Trees and then delivered them to University Hospital in remembrance of Kelly's birth. When she was born, the family brought a number of quilts to U Hospital for the new baby- so many, in fact, that they gave them to new mothers in the maternity ward. Kelly's mother, also named Kellie, died at University Hospital in 1990 from complications of diabetes. The family has made the annual delivery a tradition, and now calls the gift " Kellie's Kuilts." Sport Psychologist Meets with Russian Colleagues Keith Henschen, P. E. D., professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, recently participated in a Russian- American Symposium for sport psychology at Stanford University. Sponsored by the Easlen Institute and financed by the Ray Hartman Foundation, the symposium combined six Russian and four American sport psychologists who discussed various methods of working with high- level athletes from their countries. Plans for future collaborations, joint publications and indi-vidual professional exchanges also were discussed. Henschen also was elected to the Managing Council of the International Society of Sport Psychology ( ISSP) at its recent congress in Lisbon, Portugal.
