There's not a lot in our culture that prepares us for a loss or change, and this class makes it possible for people to express themselves." But with childbearing comes excitement, fear of the unknown and, sometimes, anxiety about being a good parent. University Hospital's Perinatal Patient Education program helps new parents prepare for the upcoming changes in their lives, and the final step- parenthood. The Perinatal Patient Education program at UH consists of more than 20 classes, from early pregnancy, to labor and delivery and infant parenting. According to Claire Stanley, R. N., Perinatal Patient Education coordinator, there are more than 18 instructors who teach classes six days a week, five hours a day. " Our classes fill up quickly," said Stanley. " With the variety of classes, our enrollment is as high as it has ever been. We like to have people sign up months ahead of time to ensure them of a class time that best fits their schedule." Among the many classes offered are three new additions to the program: unexpected outcomes, HIV Discussion In Nursing Grand Rounds A special Nursing Grand Rounds will be open to all UMC employees and staff on June 11 at 11: 50 a. m. in Classroom B. U Hospital Seeks Pastoral Caregivers The goal of University Hospital's Pastoral Care Advisory Council is to ensure that every patient who wants to be called on by a representative of his or her religious faith receives such a visit. " We are asking for increased participation from the Protestant denominations," says Ann Clark, hospital pastoral care coordinator. " Many local clergy are too busy to come to the hospital and visit with someone who is not from their particular congregation," she says. " We think, however, that there are some University Medical Center employees who are active in their faiths and qualified to visit and pray with patients at the patient's request. " Interested employees should contact me. We will clear them with the council and with the local clergy of that faith, and then keep a list of pastoral caregivers who are employ-ees, to be used in emergencies," Clark says. " The Mormons are well organized and visit the hospital every day. We have a Roman Catholic priest assigned to the hospital, along with a very dedicated employee lay worker, and the Jewish rabbi comes whenever he is needed," Clark added. Employees willing and qualified to serve as pastoral caregivers should contact Clark at x 1- 2666, or visit her at the hospital Information Desk. Supervisors of employees asked to provide pastoral care will, of course, be asked if they can release the employee for the time required.
