Staff may register to volunteer at Camp Williams on the site. U Seeks Input for NCAA Certification The U of U is seeking public comment regarding a campuswide study of the school s athletics program as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's ( NCAA) certification program. The purpose of the program, which all Division I institutions undergo every 10 years, is to ensure integrity in the U's athletics operations. The University community and the public are encouraged to learn about the process and submit comments. A special Web site has been set- up for this purpose at the following address: www. utah. edu/ ncaacertification. Final drafts of the Self- Study Reports are available on the Web site by clicking on the link on the left side of the home page. Employee Forums Set This Week Join University Health Care administrators for a report on last year's goals, future goals, and answers to employee questions at the one- hour employee forums. U mascot Swoop made a timely appearance at the ribbon- cutting ceremony, which recognized the generous contributions of Spencer and Cleone Eccles. Grand Opening for Eccles Health Sciences Education Building A grand- opening ceremony on Sept. 1 officially opened the $ 40 million, 158,000- square- foot Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles Health Sciences Education Build-ing. The state- of- the- art building replaces teaching facilities that date back to the early 1950s and provides interdisciplinary classroom, lab, and health- care training facilities. Students from the medical school, and colleges of nursing, pharmacy, and health, will use the building, which was funded by a state appropriation and organiza-tions and individuals, including benefactors Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles, who gave $ 7 million to the project. The event featured remarks by U President Michael K. Young, A. Lorris Betz, M. D., Ph. D., senior vice president for Health Sciences and executive dean of the medical school, Spencer F. Eccles, Muhammad Khan, M. D., a former U medical student, and Utah state Sen. John L. Valentine and Rep. Greg J. Curtis. The building also features a four- panel mural by internationally acclaimed artists Galina Perova and Alexander Charin that depicts the history of the health sciences in Utah. Pat Cartwright, left, and Doug Carrell, completed the 30- mile run along the Inca trail among the top finishers. SOM Duo Run to Machu Pichu What did you do this summer? Well, School of Medicine faculty members Doug Carrell, Ph. D., and Pat Cartwright, M. D., ran 30 miles up and down Peru's Andes Mountains in a race to the ancient Inca city of Machu Pichu. Carrell, associate professor of urology, who was an LDS missionary in Peru, said the run along the Inca trail was a " major adventure." Although he's run 12 mara-thons, Carrell said the 9,000- to 14,000- foot altitudes were challenging, as was navigating the trail, which took runners up and down nearly 1,300 rock steps. Cartwright, professor of urology, who is an experienced long- distance trail runner, said it was an " awesome run." " The course was rugged and rocky with some tough climbs," he said. Among the 40 runners, Cartwright and Carrell completed the June race fourth and sixth, respectively, finishing in about 6 hours and 30 minutes. Research Administrative Offices Move The U Vice President for Research has announced the relocation of the research administration offices to Build-ing 512, located south of the Health Sciences Education Building at 75 South 2000 East. The building, formerly the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational Health, will be called the Research Administration Building ( RAB). Occupants include the Associate Vice President for Research, the Institutional Review Board, the Office of Sponsored Projects, Radiological Health, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, the Office of Com-parative Medicine, and the Conflict of Interest office. An open house will be held Sept. 23 at noon. U Staff, Patients Dash for Donation The Solid Organ Transplant Program formed a 70- member team of transplant recipients, staff, and their family members and friends to participate in last month's 5K Dash for Donation, sponsored by Intermountain Donation Services, England Trucking, and transplant organizations. The group, which won the " largest team" award, joined other U transplant recipients and staff for a picnic following the race. The ninth annual race, held at Sugarhouse Park, raised more than $ 13,000 for programs raising awareness for organ and tissue donation. PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER Group Works to Improve Pain Care University Health Care's Acute Pain Service is recog-nizing Pain Awareness Month this month by inviting participation in the Pain Improvement Group ( PIG). The group meets regularly to improve pain management, patient care, and patient satisfaction. Prompt, adequate relief from pain is a priority of patient care, and pain management is a responsibility of all members of the health- care team.
