Volume5/1994_October24October 24, 1994 PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Staff and Faculty News Becky Hatfield Hatfield Elected President of UPA Becky Hatfield, from University Hospital's Parent- to- Parent program, has been named presi-dent- elect of the Utah Perinatal Association ( UPA). The UPA is a 17- year-old organization whose goal is to promote optimal perinatal health care. Members include child-birth educators, nurses, physicians, nurse mid-wives, social workers, and many others. Hatfield is the first non- clinical member ( i. e., physician, nurse, etc.) to serve as the organization's president- elect. New Director of Nurse- Midwifery The U College of Nursing recently ap-pointed Marilyn Stewart as director of its Nurse- Midwifery program. Stewart joins the U after years of working as a nurse midwife. Most recently, she worked as utilization director for FHP's California and Utah regions. She received her B. S. and M. S. from the University of Utah College of Nursing and her M. B. A. from the University of California- Irvine. • Marilyn Stewart William I. Higuchi U Pharmaceutics Chair to be Honored by Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists William L Higuchi, Ph. D., distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Pharmaceutics in the University | of Utah College of Pharmacy, will receive the 1994 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists ( AAPS) Dale E. Wurster Award in Pharmaceutics at an awards ceremony next month in San Diego, Calif. Sponsored by the Wurster Development Fund of the University of Iowa Foundation, the Wurster award is given to individuals who have made significant research contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences in the specific field of pharmaceutics, including such areas as physical pharmacy, dosage form design and biopharmaceutics. The award includes a $ 10,000 cash prize and an engraved plaque. A member of the U faculty since 1982, Higuchi has pioneered work in drug release and drug delivery, and the numerous basic principles he has elucidated are the foundation for much of the current research in drug delivery being conducted in pharmaceutical laboratories throughout the world. " Dr. Higuchi is recognized for his longstanding and significant contributions to drug delivery research in general and transdermal drug delivery in particular," says John W. Mauger, Ph. D., dean of the U College of Pharmacy. Call pager 6280 for a vaccine If you have questions, call xl- 2227. • Medical Students Plan Regional Conference in Park City Volunteers Needed for Bennion Center Service Project The Bennion Center Staff Advisory Committee is seeking 30 volunteers ( and 10 vehicles) to help sort, pack and deliver supplemental food boxes to low- income, homebound elderly persons and others with disabilities. The service project is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5, at 9 a. m. at 1025 South 700 West in West Valley City. Call Shelly Fagerlund, x5- 3852 or Wendi Maichel, xl- 7785 to RSVP or for more information. • Medical students from 17 schools will gather in Park City Oct. 28- 30 for the American Medical Student Association ( AMSA) Region 10 Conference. The University of Utah School of Medicine chapter of AMSA will host events at The Yarrow hotel. The conference, with the theme " Integrative Medicine from Asclepius to Iliad" will feature numerous workshops to give medical students a broader understanding of some of the rapidly growing areas which are becoming increasingly involved in the health- care industry. Topics include " expert systems" computer programs ( such as Iliad, which was developed at the U), homeopathy, herbalism, physician assistants, midwifery and women's health, and acupuncture. Keynote speakers are Joseph D. Andrade, Ph. D., professor of bioengineering at the University of Utah, " Engineering/ Finance: The Future of Health Care;" Dana Ullman, University of California at Berkeley, " Homeopathic Medicine: Recent Research in Homeopathy and Applications for Medical Practice;" and Alicin VanFrank, M. D., Univer-sity of North Carolina, " Health of the Medical Student, Resident, and Doctor." Schools belonging to Region 10, in addition to Utah, are the universi-ties of Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, and Southern California; the universities of Califor-nia at Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego; Stanford University; Loma Linda University; the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific and the University of Health Sciences, Oregon. Conference planners are Utah chapter AMSA co- presidents Mark Mollinet and Slade Spen-cer; and members To ran MacArthur, Cinda Parker, Sean Parker, Rod McKinlay, Kirk Leininger, Ryan Ridges and Greg Eyre. AMSA, the largest organization for medical students, has 30,000 members nationwide. It is an independent group, with no affiliation with the American Medical Association, which fosters leadership, sponsors community projects and provides an avenue for students to address issues in medicine. The Utah AMSA chapter was instrumental in establishing the Saturday clinic at the Salt Lake City homeless shelter, sponsors lectures at the medical school and, this year, is planning a child immunization project. • U Hospital Exclusive Premiere of New " Miracle on 34th Street" Twentieth Century Fox, in cooperation with University Hospital's Social Activities Committee, will present three Hospital- exclusive screenings of the all- new " Miracle on 34th Street." The premieres will be shown Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 2 and 3, at 7: 30 p. m. at Trolley Square Cinemas. A third showing is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 7 at 7: 30 p. m. in the Broadway Cinemas. Tickets will be given away by U Hospital's Executive Director, Christine St- Andre, Thurs-day, Oct. 27 at 2 p. m. in front of Volunteer Services ( AA218), and again at the Ambassador Building at 2: 30 p. m. The film is rated G and each ticket is good for two admissions to the premiere. • UH Halloween Costume Contest One Week Away; Registration Deadline, This Friday at Noon Still haven't decided if you want to enter this year's University Hospital Costume Contest' Did we mention first place receives $ 100 in cash?! The 1994 University Hospital Costume Contest is scheduled for next Monday, Oct. 31, from 11: 30- 1 p. m. in the Wasatch Spectrum Cafeteria. Sponsored by Nutrition Care Services, the contest will be judged in three categories: spookiest, most humorous, and most creative. First place in each category receives $ 100 cash, while second place finishers receive $ 50 ( prize money is being donated by Sysco Intermountain Food Service). The event will be emceed by Z93 radio personalities Dan Bammes and Chris " The Red Rocker" Hagen.
