Volume5/1994_January24January 24, 1994 PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Nursing Professor to Serve on NIH Research Study Group Lillian Nail, Ph.D., associate professor and associate dean for research at the University of Utah College of Nursing, has been appointed to serve on a committee reviewing grant applications to the National Institutes of Health ( NIH). Her term on the Nursing Research Study Section in the Division of Research Grants will continue through June 1996. Before joining the U nursing college faculty in the summer of 1990, Nail held a joint appointment as assistant professor in the school of nursing and the cancer center at the University of Rochester, Rochester, N. Y. At the U, Nail's research focus is on ways to help patients cope with cancer, including relief from treatment side effects. NIH study sections make recommendations on grant applications to the appropriate NIH board and survey the status of research in their fields. " Dr. Nail's selection attests to her national recognition as a scientist and we are very pleased that she has received this honor," said Linda K. Amos, Ed. D., professor and dean of the College of Nursing. " This opportunity for her to help assure the quality of the NIH peer review process also will expand the horizon of her own research. We're very proud to have her serve on this study section." • A Roast for the Boss Faculty and staff at University Hospital recently held a roast in honor of Dale Gunnell. He is moving from Hospital Administra-tion, where he has served as interim director since January 1991, to associate health sciences vice president for business opera-tions. The roast featured speeches from Evelyn Hartigan, R. N., Ed. D., associate administrator, Judy Kiernan, R. N., Ph. D., nursing administration, and a song and dance performance by four unidentified fish. Rothenberg Named New Director of Ambulatory Care Division Susan Rothenberg is the new director of Ambulatory Care Services, Hospital Clinics. She began working at University Hospital last week. She joins Wayne Imbrescia as the second director of the Ambulatory Care Division. Rothenberg will be directly responsible for the following clinics and programs: Pediat-rics; Ob- gyn; Dermatology; Special Medicine; Laser/ Lithotripsy Unit; Pain Manage-ment; Medicine; Surgery; | H 1 i f c ? M Susan Rothenberg Dental; Plastic Surgery; Gastroenterology Lab; and the Bone Marrow Transplant and Dumke Dialysis ambulatory clinical programs. She received her bachelor's degree in health services administration from California State College and is working toward a master's degree in business administra-tion. For the past three years, Rothenberg has been the provider relations manager for Humana Health Care Plan of San Antonio, Texas. She concentrated on the management of the providers' relationship services, a 923- provider network base, with an emphasis in credentialing functions of providers. Prior to that, she worked as the medical staff affairs manager for Humana Hospitals of San Antonio. • & Printed on Recycled Paper U Pharmacist Named Vice Chair of National Pharmacy Committee Linda S. Tyler, Pharm. D., assistant director of University Hospital's Drug Information Service, has been named vice chair of the Specialty Practice Group on Drug Information Practice, a subgroup of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists ( ASHP). The purpose of the group is to foster j development and enhancement of practice skills in the area of drug information. ASHP is the 27,000- member national professional association that represents Linda S. Tyler pharmacists who practice in health- cane systems, including hospitals, health maintenance organizations, long- term care facilities and home- care agencies. The society has extensive publishing and educational programs designed to help members improve their delivery of pharmaceutical care, and it is a national accrediting organization for pharmacy residency and pharmacy technician training programs. • ' Use More Pasta'- Next Topic of Monthly Healthy Cooking Class The second class in a monthly cooking series, " Pasta, Just Add Water and Stir," is scheduled for Feb. 8 and 9, from noon~ l p. m. in room 124 of the Alfred C. Emery building. Sponsored by the University Nutrition Clinic, this class will introduce new and delicious ways to use more pasta. Those attending will learn how to make pasta from scratch, as well as learning about new sauces, salads and side dishes. Cost of the class is $ 10 and enrollment is limited to 15, so call xl- 5417 for more information. • Asian Interpreters Needed for Hospital The Office of Public Affairs is collecting names for an interpreters' list. It's comprised of faculty, staff, students and volunteers who speak other languages well enough to interpret for patients and visitors to the Health Sciences Center. Still missing from the list are some Asian interpreters ( Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian). Tickets to see the Jazz play the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 9 are $ 14 ( reg. $ 17). On Feb. 23 and 28, $ 14 seats are available for the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets. For more informa-tion, call the Cashier's Office, xl- 2100. • Retirements T Moore Retires After 30 Years Mason Moore, director of third- party reimbursement, Budget and Reimbursement Office, was honored at an open house last week for his retirement on Jan. 12. Mason and his wife Trudy are planning a long trip to Hawaii this year and Mason hopes to get in a few more rounds of golf. Also, Mason received a new basketball to use when he plays every Saturday morning. Finshed Making Deliveries James C. Warenski, M. D., professor of general obstetrics and gynecology, was joined by his wife Marilyn, right, and his administrative assistant of 33 years, Ruby Kladis, at his retire-ment party last week.
