In the past, you might have tried the School of Medicine Computer Center, the Help Desk, Informa-tion Systems or even Medical Informatics. Now, all of the computer network systems within the Hospital and the School of Medicine will be consolidated into W U Employee Named Vice President of International Association Pieter J. van der Have, director of Plant Operations at the Univer-sity of Utah and acting director of Facilities and Engineering at University Hospital, has been named vice president for Information Services of the International Associa-tion for Higher Education Facilities Officers. The appointment will be announced at the annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas, July 12. van der Have, who has been with the U for more than 25 years, was elected vice president by the association's 3,000 members. He will serve a two- year term. " My goal as vice president of this association is to establish an electronic highway among the members," says van der Have. " I'm also writing a book about ways to ' rightsize' a facilities department, by looking at the strategic goals of an institution and how to organize a department so it helps meet those goals." van der Have, who has been a member of the Association for Higher Education Facilities Officers for 18 years, will be responsible for publishing monthly newsletters, quarterly journals and recognizing the needs of smaller departments and how to provide better service to them. • Pieter van der Have Networks Consolidate to Improve Services one department- Hospital and Clinical Informatics ( HCI). This reorganization is not complete, but should be in the near future, says Homer R. Warner, M. D., Ph. D., the new chief information officer for the Health Sciences Center. HCI will be responsible for overseeing the major computer services within the facility, including Allegra, StatLAN, Cerner, Decrad, Mediserve, Medisource and many more. While all of the same functions will still be operational ( i. e., help desk, E- mail, the financial systems), more time can be spent improv-ing the network systems throughout the institution. According to Warner, bringing all the programs and databases that are used by more than one department into one organization will result in better service to the faculty, staff and, eventually, the patients of University Hospital and clinics. " With all the information being managed by one depart-ment, we can coordinate and maintain the databases and services available on the network," says Warner. " We hope to eliminate duplication of programs and services. Information about a patient originating in one clinic will be accessible in other clinics. Also, the networks will be more efficient, cost-effective, and allow us time to focus on improving the patient information system." Warner adds that another important function of HCI will be to coordinate existing network information with the new information needs of all departments. • Spring Quarter Volleyball Champs The team of Odds n'Ends took first place in the University Hospital Spring Quarter Volleyball League. The team included Cindl Perry, Bridget Quintana, Cecily Light, Juse Meto, RJ. Suave and Murray Hay ward. Registration for the summer league ends soon. Respiratory Wins the Sputum Bowl Left to right: Nancy Haley, RRT; Katby Kramer, RRT; Karen HUUer, RRT; and Tabitha Singleton, RRT, from University Hospital's Respiratory Care Department, are the State Sputum Bowl Champions. The Sputum Bowl is a Jeopardy- like competition, where respiratory care teams from throughout the state answer questions relating to all facets of respiratory care. Questions range among chemis-try, physics, pathology, neonatal respiratory care, phar-macology and adult respiratory care. This is the fifth straight year the UH team has brought the Bowl back to the U. In December, the team will go to the national conference in Las Vegas to compete for the national crown. Ordering Lunch From Nutrition Care? Better Use the Right Campus Order Beginning July 1, any campus orders sent to Nutrition Care Services for meal requests must be filled out on the most recent campus order form. The updated campus order is similar to the old form, except for two new areas which must be completed. The first area asks for a list of attendees ( if 10 or fewer) or the name of the group in attendance. The second space asks for a detailed description of the purpose of the meeting. The new campus order forms were integrated into the Hospital billing system last summer, so all depart-ments should be using them. Any requests sent to Nutrition Care on the old form will not be honored. The updated forms are available in the Accounting Office on the U campus. Campus Recreation Campus Recreation fees for faculty and staff will increase to $ 30 a year on July 1 and rise incrementally to $ 50 over a five- year period. Other recreation facility users- spouses, part- time employees, students, etc.~ will have similar increases, and Research Park and military users will be paying $ 90. " The rising costs of facility maintenance and Fees Increase July 1 new equipment have caught up with us," says John Boswell, director, Campus Recreation. " Increased revenue will allow us to address the many suggestions for improvements we have received, but our fees will continue to be a fraction of the cost of joining a spa or health club." • Teaching Medicine at a Child's Level Katy the Kangaroo made a recent visit to the children in the Hospital's Child Development Center. Katy, who is part of the Department of Pharmacy's campaign, " Healthy People 2000," visits children in schools and development centers to educate them about different diseases, what medicines do for us and answer any questions the kids might have. ^ ^ Printed on Recycled P a p er Dean's Office Adopts a Child Thousands of Miles Away Staff from the Dean's Office in the School of Medicine recently began sponsoring a foster child in Ecuador through the program ChildReach. Manuel Maria Buna, who just turned five years old, receives financial aid from his adoptive family in the School of Medicine. Each member of the Dean's Office sends $ 2 a month to support Manuel with his education, clothing, food and health care
