Based on a nationwide poll of thousands of medical specialists, the book lists 7,200 physicians. The majority of the U faculty listed are on the medical staff of University of Utah Hospital; some hold joint medical staff appoint-ments at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Primary Children's Medical Center, LDS Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital and Cottonwood Hospital. D D. w Printed on Recycled Paper In Memoriam Sylvia Anderson, who was a volunteer at University Hospi-tal and a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, died on Jan. 24 from ovarian cancer. Anderson began volunteering at U Hospital in November of 1985. She volunteered 1,408 hours, most of which were spent at the information desk in the lobby. According to Jay Oberst, cafeteria manager, the transac-tion takes approximately 15-- 20 seconds by using a phone modem. • League of Women Voters Schedule Meeting at U The University of Utah section of the League of Women Voters has scheduled its next meeting for Feb. 10, at noon, in the Bennion Center in room 101 of the Olpin Union building. Anyone is welcome to attend. The League of Women Voters is a national non-partisan organization which promotes informed and active participation in politics and government. Future discus-sions include education, after-school child care and the Jordan River Parkway. Membership is open to all citizens of voting age. For more information call Ann Wechsler at x 14811. • U Honorary Nursing Society Sets Reception for Norma Matheson Norma Matheson, who has served as chair of the Utah Nursing Resource Task Force for more than eight years, will be honored at a reception Feb. 1 in recognition of her recent induction into Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Gamma Rho, the Univer-sity of Utah College of Nursing's chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, will host the event, scheduled from 6: 30- 8: 30 p. m. at the Alumni House on the U campus. Matheson was inducted into the nursing society as an honorary member during the group's convention in Indian-apolis in December, along with Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Patrick DeLeon, adminis-trative assistant for Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, D- Hawaii. According to Lee Walker, Ph. D., assistant professor of nursing and president of the University of Utah chapter, honorary membership recog-nizes people outside the nursing profession who demonstrate a commitment to the ideals, purposes and concerns of nursing. Norma Matheson " Mrs. Matheson was recognized for her advocacy for better quality and access to health care and her work with the Utah Nursing Resource Task Force since 1986. Her leadership resulted in the development of short- and long- range recruitment and retention strategies for nursing personnel throughout the health- care industry and increased legislative appropria-tions for various schools of nursing in the state," Walker said. • Spine Center Now Open Saturdays The University Hospital Spine Rehab Center has expanded its services to Saturday. The center, which opened Jan. 7,1993, and is designed to serve individuals with back and spine problems on an outpatient basis, is now open from 8 a. m.~ 4: 40 p. m. every Saturday. Administrators and directors from University Hospital partici-pate in a panel discussion of cultural diversity in the workplace. Hospital Department Head Group Discusses Cultural Diversity Administrators and directors from University of Utah Hospital met at a Department Head Group Workshop last Friday, Jan. 21, at University Park Hotel to discuss ways to improve communication and promote better understanding with the diverse cultures represented by staff and patients. Sponsored by hospital administration with support from Carolyn Andree, Ph. D., organizational consultant, Center for Public Policy and Administration, the daylong seminar focused on such topics as general issues in diversity- stereotypes, demographic changes, political correctness, methods of training-to common cultural differences that affect the workplace. During the afternoon session, the department head group heard from a panel of representatives from the Native American, African American, Pacific Islander, Hispanic and Japanese American communities. Each member of the panel shared his or her experiences as members of ethnically diverse cultures in Salt Lake. They suggested ways to better communicate with and understand individuals from their cultures and how hospital staff can continue to improve patient relations. " With the increasing cultural diversity of Utah and the Intermountain region, it's our responsibility to become more aware and gain insight into and understanding of these cultures," said Bill Cesarone, M. P. A., University Hospital director of professional services. " As we recruit support and professional staff and further educate our managers and staff, we want to emphasize the importance of providing quality patient care to people from all cultures through pro- active training programs." Bel Randall, Bill Duncan and Sylva Staab from Human Resources, Abe Bakhsheshy, director of Environmental Services and Judy Kiernan, Nursing Administration and chair of Univer-sity Hospital's Department Head Group were responsible for planning the event.
