KISN radio's Rob Boshard was on hand to emcee the event, which featured free hot dogs, chips, drinks and a number of friendly competitions among various hospital departments. Rehab II won the overall competi-tion, edging out medical records. The team claimed a custom- designed bedpan trophy that will serve as a traveling prize. According to the social activities committee, which sponsored the event, there are plans to make this an annual affair. Next year a challenge may be extended to Primary Chil-dren's Medical Center employees. Also announced at the picnic was the winner of the cotton ball contest. T J . Smith, engineering, came closest with a guess of 2,050, just 39 short of the actual 2,089. He won 25 silver dollars ( and a box of cotton balls!) for his expertise at guestimation. And the finale for the picnic- a grudge basketball game between the Big Dukes and the Little Fat Fel-lows- ended in a huge surprise. The big guys were a no- show! The short players arrived in a white stretch limousine, with matching unifroms and bribe money for the refs. After a short warm- up, they were handed a letter announcing that the Big Dukes were not going to make it. The winners and 1990 champs are Dick Alexander, Abe Bakhsheshy, A1 Tokunaga, Tim Branigan, Bruce Mannis, Ray Hagen, Mike Ashburn and Doug Whitney. They were cheered to victory by cheerleaders Cynthia Faircloth and Pam North. The impartial ref was Dave Lovato. UH Games ' 90 May 17, 1990 UH Games Celebrate Hospital Week The hospital's front parking lot took on a festive mood last week as Rehab II champs show off thier trophy. UHSC Construction Update Construction. It's a sign of progress and a familiar sight at the health sciences center. Here's an update on the latest projects: The new health sciences parking terrace- with 540 stalls- is sched-uled to open in September, in time for fall quarter. It is located south of the genedcs building and will available to all health sciences employees. Parking on Medical Drive will disappear in mid- June, when Medical Drive reverts to a four- lane road. Approximately 150 parking spots will be lost. Last Saturday was a gratifying evening for members of the UTAH Cardiac Transplant team. They were honored at a homecoming banquet attended by more than 50 heart transplant recipients who had traveled from all over the country for the occasion. The patients assembled to celebrate life. And to honor the medical team that had made it all possible. Barbara Kirby, heart transplant recipient # 170, came up with the idea nearly a year ago. She wanted to find an appropriate way to say thanks to the UTAH Cardiac staff and a homecoming marking the program's fifth anniversary seemed like the perfect chance. In a press conference earlier Saturday, Barbara said, " Other than transplant recipients, I don't think anyone could really understand. It's hard to explain what it is to live, have one more chance at life- to be with your family, to be with your children, to see them grow up." During the banquet, held at the University Park Hotel, plaques were presented to the medical teams at the three institutions comprising the UTAH Cardiac Transplant Program: University and LDS hospitals and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Sometime this summer, a renova-tion project will begin on the West parking terrace. Construction is expected to last several months and will affect levels 8,9 and 10. Ground- breaking on the new Moran Eye Center is slated for late summer. The building will be built on the hill northwest of the hospital in what is now A parking, displacing an estimated 90 slots. The genetics building will be completed this fall and the addition to the animal research building should be finished by next April. One of the co- directors was absent that night, however, as the program's 305th transplant was being per-formed. UTAH Cardiac is one of the largest and most successful heart transplant programs in the country, with a one- year survival rate of 89 percent. U Physician Named European Fellow Alan P. Newman, M. D., assistant professor of surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine, has been selected as a European Traveling Fellow by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Newman will leave for Europe the end of May and spend more than a month visiting 11 cities including Athens, Rome, London and Stock-holm. The program is an exchange that allows sports medicine specialists from both Europe and the United States to visit clinics and share ideas. Dr. Newman calls the program a scientific interchange and he hopes to " bring back new ideas" from his visit to Europe. In addition to clinic visits, Dr. Newman also will have the opportunity to observe a number of sports medicine and knee surgical procedures and attend several conferences. Registration is $ 130 per team; play begins June 11. • Red Butte Gardens will hold its annual plant sale Saturday, May 19, 9 a. m.- 3 p. m. south of the Huntsman Center. Prices range from $ 1-$ 100 for a variety of herbs, trees, shrubs and household plants. Horticulturists and master gardeners will be on hand to answer your questions. Between May 27 and June 6, the library will offer extended hours to accommodate students studying for exams. Shortened hours will go into effect June 8- 24. And beginning June 25, summer hours will run 7: 30 a. m.- 10 p. m., Monday through Thursday; 7: 30 a. m.- 6: 30 p. m., Fridays and 9 a. m.- 6 p. m., Saturdays. The library will be closed on Sundays. • A workshop on interactive video in health education- featuring the " Slice of Life" videodisc- will be held June 18- 19 at University Park Hotel. The seminar is being sponsored by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library, Instructional Media and the Office of Continuing Educa-tion. For registration information call xl- 8664.
