Frisse, M. D. The structure of health care financing and mechanisms for supporting biomedical research are entering a period of dramatic change. Although it is too soon to estimate the impact of these changes on academic health sciences centers, one can justifiably argue that the preservation of our academic mission will require more effective methods for information management. The proliferation of inexpensive personal computers, the widespread acceptance of CD- ROM and other mass storage technologies, and the growing availability of computer networks suggest that technical issues will not be the major constraint in applying new digital systems to pressing information management problems. Instead, one can argue that people will be the rate limiting factor. It will be human beings who determine a global vision of their enterprise; people who will adopt social and technical standards; people who will develop methods for implementing and paying for new systems; and people who will provide a framework for deliberating about conflicts between the need for widespread access to biomedical information and the concerns of intellectual property and confidentiality. This lecture will discuss the technical and administrative issues which must be addressed for an institution to arrive at a consensus for information management policies, and to develop a " seamless" information management system. These issues include: the development of a computing and networking infrastructure- - an infrastructure whose definition includes hardware, software, people, and management; the development of realistic expectations on the extent to which information technology can support collaborative work; the development and support of databases and other institutional information resources; the struggle to define the content and presentation of the computer- based medical record; the spectrum of opportunities to train and specialize in medical informatics; the steps required to realize a useful " digital library" system; and the evolving role of the health sciences library in these initiatives. Several types of operational systems will be discussed, including: digital library systems, radiology picture archiving and communications systems, academic computing facilities, collaborative work tools, and systems to support publication of human genome maps. Burrowing Through Gopherspace Kenneth S. Hulme Gopher is software which was developed at the University of Minnesota to provide menu access to Internet resources and services. The history of Gopher, advantages and disadvantages of using Gopher, a demonstration of how to navigate through Gopherspace, and an opportunity to give Gopher a try will be included in this presentation. Multimedia Techniques for Dynamic Lecture Presentations Sharon E. Dennis New multimedia computer technologies can be valuable assets for teaching. Using the computer and an overhead projector, instructors can move beyond lectures with statii slides to create dynamic presentations that includi appropriate animations, digitized images, sound, and evei digitized video. Advantages of using multimedia technique: and software such as Aldus Persuasion, HyperCard QuickTime, and MacroMind Director will be discussed. Health Sciences Resources on the Internet Joan M. Marcotte Gregory Health sciences resources on the Internet include electronic discussion groups, electronic bulletin boards, library online catalogs, gophers, campus- wide information systems, databases, software archives, full- text documents and more. Access to these resources will be demonstrated and instructions for accessing these resources will be provided. Grateful Med and Loansome Doc Kathleen M. McCloskey and Molly Youngkin Grateful Med and Loansome Doc are programs available from the National Library of Medicine to assist individuals in searching the medical literature and obtaining copies of articles which meet their information needs.
