On Tuesday, March 16, Margaretta Styles, R. N., Ph. D., FAAN, will discuss " Issues in International Nursing." Her presenta-tion is slated from 3 - 5 p. m. in room 205 of the College of Nursing. On Wednesday, March 17 at 1 p. m. Sandra Bagley, R. N., Ph. D., will share her recent experiences in Somalia with " A Nurse's Experience in a Somalian Refugee Camp." The presentation is scheduled in room 212 of the College of Nursing. All faculty, students and nursing staff are encouraged to attend. PUT^ E - V UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER College Of Health Names Nutrition Clinic Director The appointment of Christine Gardner as director of the University of Utah Nutrition Clinic has been announced by David M. Compton, Ed. D., dean of the College of Health. Gardner, a clinical instructor in the Division of Foods and Nutrition in the College of Health, previously was an administrator at Western States Family Clinic, Salt Lake City. She holds bachelor degrees in economics and political science from the U, and now is working toward a master's degree in health services administra-tion and economics at the U. The nutrition clinic was estab-lished in 1986 to provide technical and clinical support for faculty research and to provide nutrition services for the university and the public. " Ms. Gardner is a dynamic Utah Legislature Recognizes Two Former U Surgeons Resolutions honoring two former faculty from the University of Utah School of Medicine recently were passed by the Utah State Legislature. John A. Dixon, M. D., and William A. Gay Jr., M. D., were honored for their contribution to medicine in their respective fields. Dixon, who died February 15, 1992, was recognized for his distin-guished medical career and his contribution to the advancement of quality health care and medical research in the state of Utah. Gay, who recently accepted a position with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in New York, was honored for his remarkable success in pioneering the Intermountain region's first heart transplant program. Frances Gay, his wife, also was mentioned for her innovative use of the arts as a therapeutic device. According to Gardner, 1992 was a banner year for the clinic in the number of people served. Wellness programs for corporate clients are a major activity, although weight control counseling is available for individuals as well. In addition, the clinic provides nutritional counseling for the U athletic department and consultation for individuals who require special diets, such as diabetic and cardiovascular patients. The clinic also provides clinical training for the U's graduate nutrition stu-dents, Gardner said. Printed on Recycled Paper New Staff Appointments Marjorie Pearson, ME. d., has been named manager of the Child Development Center at University Hospital. Pearson will manage the 90- child facility, scheduled to open on July 1. Her responsibilities will include: supervision of child center staff; monitoring the lottery selec-tion process; and developing learning programs for children. From 1969 to 1983, Pearson worked at the U's College of Nursing as director of the Life Study Center. Jennifer Blakeman, O. T. R., is the new manager of University Hospital's Occupational Therapy Department. Blakeman has been an occupa-tional therapist at the U since 1985. She will manage the 20 occupa-tional therapists within the depart-ment. Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Of Salt Lake Sponsor Bowl For Kids' Sake Time to register is running out! The University Hospital Bowl for Kids' Sake Bowl- A- Thon is sched-uled for Saturday, April 17, from 1 - 3 p. m., at the 49th Street Galleria. Sponsored by UH's Social Activities Committee, the annual event raises money for Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Greater Salt Lake. Each participant will receive two games of bowling, free shoe rentals, pizza and soda and be eligible for a drawing involving hundreds of prizes. The Departmental Relay will start that morning at 8 a. m„ with prizes for the top three departments. Hospital Games are scheduled for Thursday, May 13. This year's event will take place west of the Hospital ( near the loading docks and the credit union). Lori Tew in NBICU is chair of the event. All hospital employees and their families are invited to attend. Abe Bakhsheshy, director, Envi-ronmental Services, has movie tickets for two Hospital exclusives in April. Tickets for " Indecent Exposure," starring Robert Redford and " Cliffhanger," starring Sylvester Stallone, will be available soon. Watch for announcements around the Medical Center. Retirement Seminars For University Employees During May and June, University of Utah's Training and Development Department will host a Retirement Planning Seminar. Two sessions are scheduled on Wednesday evenings from 5: 30- 9: 30 p. m. Session I tentatively will meet on May 5,12, 19 and 26. Session II tenta-tively will meet on June 2,9,16 and 30. This seminar helps employees with the transition from employment to retirement. The specific topics that will be discussed include: - Lifestyles and Housing - Attitudes and Roles - Estate and Financial Planning - Tax- Deferred Annuities - University Retirement Options - Social Security - Pensions - Health and Fitness Employees, age 40 and over, and their spouses, are invited to attend.
