D, professor of ophthalmology and adjunct professor of physiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine, has been awarded a Jules and Doris Stein Research to Prevent Blindness ( RPB) Professorship. The prestigious award has been presented to only 20 scientists since it was created in 1984. Marc, who joined the U faculty in March of 1993, will receive a total of $ 350,000 over five years. He will use the award to fund his investigations of neural circuits in the retina in which different neurotransmitters are involved. Marc's work will help neuroscientists better understand the types of neurotransmitter molecules present in the retina and how neurons use them to communicate with each other. The Jules and Doris Stein RPB Professorship was created to help medical institutions recruit outstanding basic scientists for collaborative studies of clinically relevant problems in depart-ments of ophthalmology. RPB is the world's leading voluntary organization supporting eye research. Since it was founded in 1960, RPB has channeled more than $ 110 million to medical institutions for research into the causes, treatment and prevention of blinding eye disease. To date, RPB has awarded grants totaling more than $ 870,000 to the University of Utah. " We recruited Dr. Marc from the University of Texas because he is an exceedingly capable researcher," said Randall J. Olson, M. D., professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the U School of Medicine. " This award is indicative of his work and our sense of his potential. He is the type of individual we continually are trying to recruit to our department." Marc received his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at El Paso in 1971 and his Ph. D. from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in 1975. He worked 15 years for the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston, where he was professor of neural sciences and the Robert Greer Professor of Biomedical Sciences. • Returning From A Long Winter's Nap The Trevor Southey sculpture, titled " Healing," returned to University Hospital last week after a winter hiatus. The sculpture was removed last fall when a revolving door was installed in the main lobby. Additional names of hospital donors were added to the list at the bottom of the piece, and it also received a good cleaning. The sculpture will remain at a permanent site in front of the hospital for all visitors, patients and employees to enjoy. Don't Miss The Hospital Picnic It's happening this Wednesday, July 28, at Murray Park! Lots of fun for the whole family. There will be magicians, ponies, a kids' train, sky divers, hot air balloon rides, a dunking booth and lots of free food provided for Hospital employees and their families by Red Flame Restaurant. Parking will be available at the Vine Street and the 5300 South entrances to Murray Park. All employees and guests MUST register at the picnic registration tables to receive tickets and food stamps. An employee drawing is scheduled every hour from noon- 9 p. m., and three grand- prize drawings are scheduled for 6 p. m. Discount passes will be available for the swimming pool and the water slides for $ 3 ( regularly $ 6). The picnic, located at the east end of Murray Park, will begin at 11 a. m. and continue until 10 p. m. T- shirts are available in the Cashier's Office for $ 8. • Auxiliary Gives Two Special Gifts For UH Burn Patients Women from the Utah State Fireman's Auxiliary recently presented 42 handmade quilts to University Hospital's Intermountain Burn Center. Along with the quilts, the auxiliary also presented a check for $ 5,318 to benefit burn patients and their families. This is the third consecutive year they have raised money for the hospital's burn center. Printed on Recycled Paper Aerobic Training Discussed At UH Wellness Series On Tuesday, July 27, the Hospital will present another edition of the Summer Brown Bag Wellness Series, with " Basic Aerobic Training." The class will answer your questions about creating a basic aerobic program for yourself. An exercise physiologist will outline frequency and duration criteria for different aerobic training. Basic Aerobic Training will be presented from noon- 1 p. m. in the Third Floor Training Room in University Hospital. • Good And Good For You We've all heard this before, but it's true: You really should drink more water. Most Americans don't drink nearly enough. Six to eight glasses a day is recommended, but it's hard to pass by the water fountain or kitchen sink often enough to consume that much.
