Volume5/1996_September23PULSE September 23, 1996 UNIVERSITY 0F UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Huntsman Cancer Institute Construction Update Construction of the Huntsman Cancer Institute is scheduled to begin the first of October. Construction of the new facility, east of the Hospital, is expected to last through 1998. HSC employees should anticipate a number of changes as construction gets under way, including increased traffic from construction workers' vehicles, dust, and dis-placement of parking stalls. Initial work in October will consist of installing the fencing that will enclose the building site and construction staging areas. Jacobsen Construction Company office trailers and equipment then will be moved to the site. Approximately 320 parking places are expected to be relocated during construction. When construction is complete, more than 200 of those parking slots again will be available. Shuttle service has been rerouted ( see story p. 2) to provide easy access for employees whose parking stalls will be relocated. Parking areas near Red Butte Garden and west of the baseball field are expected to compen-sate for displaced parking. A temporary road linking the parking area east of the Moran Eye Center with the parking area east of the Dumke Building is scheduled to be complete before the construction fence is installed. The road will have limited access. It is designed for patient traffic, University shuttles and emergency vehicles. Once construction is complete, a permanent road open to all vehicles will link the east parking areas. The temporary division of the east parking area means that University Hospital and Moran Eye Center will be accessible via Wasatch Drive and North Campus Drive. The south area of the upper east parking lot will be accessible via Medical Drive South. As reported. earlier in Pulse, construction workers will not be allowed to park in " A" stalls, but will be required to park in designated outlying lots and shuttle in. The Health Sciences Parking Committee is reviewing the situation and will make recommendations about parking both during construction and after completion. Officials in Campus Design and Construction say that the project will be disrup-tive but believe the impact of the construction will be reduced by keeping employ-ees informed of any delays or problems that may occur. Shuttle Service Ready for Parking Changes The purple and yellow shuttle routes serving the Health Sciences Center have been adjusted to help employees get to and from their cars during construction of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The construction is scheduled to displace approximately 320 parking stalls in the hillside lots east of the Health Sciences Center. Parking services says parking areas near Red Butte Garden and the baseball field will make up for stalls lost during construction. To provide easy access to the outlying parking areas, the yellow route now offers special service during peak hours. Between 7- 9 a. m., and 5- 7p. m., the shuttle will run back and forth every 10 minutes from the front door of the Hospital, to parking areas near Red Butte Garden, west of the baseball field, and Research Park. The purple and yellow shuttles will continue to serve the Park Building, Wasatch Clinics, Wakara Way and the U of U Neuropsychiatric Institute during regular shuttle hours. The two routes do not make stops at the Union Building or Van Cott Hall, provid-ing faster service from the Health Sciences Center to stops on campus. D., lost a personal check somewhere in the Hospital/ School of Medicine buildings last week, his faith in the integrity of Health Sciences Center employees was quickly confirmed. He received a call from Siamak Khial, Facilities and Engineering, who found the check and was holding it for Menendez. Terrace Renovation Nearly Complete The reopening of the West Parking Terrace has been delayed due to unanticipated problems in the renovation of the structure. All five floors should be reopened by Oct. 14. Parking Services says the terrace needed more work than originally thought. " It has been and contin-ues to be our goal to complete this project as quickly and efficiently as possible," said Mark Burk, assistant director of Parking Services. " Unfortunately, the deterioration of the existing structure has proven to be far more extensive than originally anticipated. The completion dates have not been met due to a signifi-cant increase in the contractor's scope of work in order to provide West Terrace patrons with a safe and lasting structure upon completion." Levels three and four will be open on Oct. 1 and level two, on Oct. 14. Level five was completed on Sept. 16. The renovated West Parking Terrace will provide the Health Sciences Center with more than 600 parking stalls. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Joseph Harman. Smith and his wife June will hold their traditional receptions for staff and faculty this week.
