D., director of the outpatient pharmacy, says the closure is planned for the President's Day weekend to inconve-nience as few customers as possible. • c Walter Stevens Stevens to Step Down as Medical School Dean, Continue on Neurobiology and Anatomy Faculty Walter Stevens, Ph. D., dean of the University of Utah School of Medicine who has held top leadership posts at the U of U Health Sciences Center for more than 15 years, has announced his intention to return to full- time teaching and research in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy. Stevens' resignation is effective July 1, 1996. He will continue to administer the affairs of the medical school until a national search for a new dean is completed. The Salt Lake City native was named dean in February 1993, but, earlier, served twice as interim dean ( 1988- 91 and January- February 1993). He was associate dean for research in the medical school from 1981- 93 and acting vice presi-dent for health sciences from 1991- 92. " Dr. Stevens has made significant continuous and lasting contributions to our medical school and health sciences center over many years," says John M. Matsen, M. D., vice president for health sciences. " He leaves an administrative legacy of unselfish commit-ment to excellence in medical education and research. He is a superior colleague. We will continue to seek his guidance and counsel in our future challenges and decisions." A member of the Utah Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy faculty since 1962, Stevens holds two degrees from the U of U: a doctorate in anatomy ( with a minor in radiobiology) and a bachelor's degree in experimental biology. He also serves as re-search professor of pharmacology and as chair of the Dean's Research Advisory Commit-tee. Stevens has had a prolific research career, most recently focused in the area of neuroendocrinology. He is well known regionally and nationally as principal investigator on a 10- year, $ 7 million study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute to determine if fallout from nuclear testing in Nevada during the 1950s was a causal factor in the inci-dence of leukemia and thyroid cancer among residents of southwest Utah, who lived downwind of the test site. A noted teacher, Stevens has taught human histology for more than three decades and served as course master of medical histology from 1974- 86. He was director of graduate studies in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy from 1967- 81. Stevens has served on medical school committees for admissions, curriculum, gradu-ate programs and promotion, retention and tenure. For the University, he served for nearly a decade on the Radiological Safety Committee ( chair from 1973- 77), Laboratory Animal Care Committee and Board of Scientific Advisors. Stevens also has served as a member and chair of the Health Sciences Center's Institutional Review Board, deputy director of the Utah Regional Cancer Center and the Clinical Research Center Advisory Committee. • Printed on Recycled Paper Zimmerman to Serve On NIH Study Section Guy A. Zimmerman, M. D., professor of internal medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine, has accepted an appointment to serve a four- year term as a member of the Lung Biology and Pathology Study Section in the Division of Research Grants of the National Institutes of Health ( NIH). NIH study sections review and make recom-mendations on grant applications submitted to the NIH, and survey the status of research in their fields of science. Zimmerman is a member of the Division of Respiratory, Critical Care and Occupational Medicine and also is a staff investigator and director of the Cardiovas-cular Pharmacology and Cell Biology Program at the medical school's Nora Eccles Harrison Cardio-vascular Research and Training Institute, a post he has held since 1984. The focus of his research is on the molecular mechanisms that govern interactions between human cells, particularly interactions that influence cardiovascular, inflamma-tory and lung diseases. The U professor holds board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine and also in his subspecialty of pulmonary disease. His professional affiliations include membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation, American Society for Cell Biology, American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the American Asso-ciation of Physicians. He has numerous peer- reviewed publica-tions, reviews and chapters to his credit and currently is associate editor, American journal of Respiratory. Cell and Molecular Biology and a member of the editorial boards of Circulation Research and journal of Biological Chemistry. He has served as referee for several other professional journals and has lectured widely throughout the United States and the world. • Preventive Cardiology Classes Offered Staff in the Edwin L. and Grace G. Osborn Two members of the U medical school radiol-ogy faculty shared the spotlight at the annual luncheon of the American Association for Women Radiologists ( AAWR) held recently in Chicago. Anne G. Osborn, M. D., F. A. C. R., professor of radiology, received the AAWR's highest award, the Marie Curie Award, for her outstanding contribution to radiology. She was introduced by die 1996 AAWR president, B. J. Manaster, M. D., Ph. D., professor and vice chair of the Department of Radiology. AAWR, founded in 1981, is the only national organization for women in radiology. Purpose of the 2,000- member group is to develop leadership among junior and senior women radiologists, and address social and economic issues facing women in radiol-ogy, including gender equity and mentors in radiol-ogy- Osbom, a longtime AAWR member, was described by Manaster as not only an " absolute model of women contrib-uting to scientific endeav-ors," but also as an accomplished mentor of young radiologists. Osborn, author of the text Diagnostic Neuroradiology, winner of a 1994 award for the Best Book in Clinical Medicine, and an interna-tionally recognized physician, lecturer and specialist in neuroradiology, joined the U faculty in 1974. Manaster, who joined the faculty in 1983, also is currently director of the Division of Diagnostic Radiology and adjunct associate professor of orthope-dic surgery at the medical school. In 1995, she was named a Fellow of the American College of Radiology ( ACR) for her significant contributions to her field. In addition to extensive professional affiliations and activities, Manaster has lectured in local high schools for the Utah Women's Math/ Science Network, encouraging women to take math and science curricula. • B.
