Volume5/1996_March04March 4, 1996 PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Hospital Receives Accreditation From Joint Commission Survey University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics has been awarded a three-year accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organiza-tions ( JCAHO). The announcement came from Chris-tine St. Andre, executive director, during last week's Management Council meeting. The accreditation award applies to all U Hospital services that were surveyed by JCAHO. University Hospitals & Clinics received the highest score avail-able in nearly ninety percent of the categories sur-veyed. Among those receiving a " substantial compli-ance" grade ( the highest score possible) were the areas of patient rights and assessment, patient care, education, management of information, improving performance and organizational leadership. " The survey reflects the hard work of our employ-ees, and I commend them for their dedication," said St. Andre. " This accreditation recognizes our commit-ment to the highest standards of quality at University Hospital and reminds us of something we have known all along- that we have an excellent hospital." Formed in 1951, JCAHO is dedicated to improving the quality of the nation's health care through volun-tary accreditation. It evaluates and accredits more than 5,200 hospitals and more than 9,000 other health care organizations. • " Self- Esteem: Creating Your Own Pot of Gold" will be the topic of a lecture, scheduled Wednesday ( March 6) at 7 p. m., at the University Neuropschiatric Institute ( UNI). The presentation, which is part of UNI's Evening With the Experts series, will be led by Mauria Tanner, M. T. R. S. She will discuss how changing vantage points can help you gain a fresh perspective on life. Mason U Faculty Cited in National Magazine As Among Country's Best Heart Doctors Three physicians on the University of Utah School of Medicine faculty have been named among " The Country's Best Heart Doctors" in the March issue of Good Housekeeping magazine. Jay W. Mason, M. D., professor of internal medicine and chief of the Division of Cardiology at the medical school, was among those cited by his peers: 260 department chairs and section chiefs in related fields at major medical centers across the United States. Also recognized were cardiologist Jeffrey L. Anderson, M. D., professor of internal medicine at the U and chief of the Division of Cardiology at LDS Hospital, and cardiothoracic surgeon Donald B. Doty, M. D., clinical professor of surgery at the U and chair of the Department of Surgery at LDS Hospital. For the Good Housekeeping telephone survey, physicians were asked, " In your opinion, which specialists provide the most expert treatment and are the leading clinicians in heart disease and strokes?" Some 1,000 specialists were named; the 357 mentioned most often were cited in the magazine. Known for his work in arrhythmias, Dr. Mason is highly successful in securing federal grant support. He has re-ceived more than $ 29 million since joining the Utah faculty in 1983. Prior to that, he had a distinguished career at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also completed an internship, residency and fellowship after earning his M. D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1971.
