Volume5/1995_November27November 27, 1995 PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Holiday Social Coming Dec. 14 The second annual University Hospital/ School of Medicine Holiday Social is coming Thursday, Dec. 14, from 2: 30- 4: 30 p. m. and again from 10: 30- 11: 30 p. m. in the Wasatch Spectrum Cafeteria. The event will include refresh-ments, holiday music and an employee prize drawing. Tickets will be distributed to employees in their Dec. 8 paychecks. You MUST have a ticket to enter the social, and don't forget to fill out the back for the employee prize draw-ing. The annual Departmental Decorating Contest will be judged Dec. 5 and 6. This year's theme is " Centennial Celebrations: 100 Years of Holidays!" The winning department will receive a pizza party for the entire staff, while the four runners- up will receive their choice of a bagel or ice cream sundae party. Parent to Parent Receives $ 500 in Honor of Volunteer's Award University Hospital's Parent to Parent ( PTP) organization is $ 500 richer, thanks to the volunteerism of Angela Vallejos, Magna, a 19- year- old single mother, who was recog-nized for her work by Mervyn's Volunteer Pro-gram ( MVP), an employee program at Mervyn's Department Stores. Ann Majdi, manager of Mervyn's at Valley Fair Mall where Vallejos works and district community coordi-nator for the chain, an-nounced Vallejos' selection as top winner in her 11- store district and presented a $ 500 check to Becky Hatfield, PTP director, in honor of Vallejos' volunteer work as Teen Representa-tive on the Parent to Parent board. Parent to Parent, a volunteer organization, was founded in 1975 at U Hospital's Newborn Intensive Care Unit by parents who had previously had a critically ill newborn in the facility. The group offers emotional support to families experiencing a high- risk or threatened pregnancy and to those who have infants hospitalized in the unit. Vallejos got to know about Parent to Parent firsthand when her 16- month old son Andrew Sorensen was born nine weeks prematurely, weighing three and one- half pounds. She is the first and only teen mother to serve as a PTP volun-teer and spends two evenings a month working for the group. A graduate of Cypress High School, Vallejos said she wants to help other teens, especially by telling them about the " sacrifices I have made because of premarital sex and, hopefully to change their minds about the subject." Her pregnancy prevented her from going on to school at Snow College, and she said the hardest thing for her now is to realize that her friends all are a year ahead of her in school. " I'm trying to get my life back on track and hope to attend the U winter quarter if finances permit. I'd like to study recreational therapy," she said. Her son's father, Jeremy Sorensen, has been supportive and helps care for the baby when she works, she added. " Angie is a devoted mother and a special Parent to Parent volunteer, bringing a new perspective by reaching out to the numerous teen parents who have babies in the intensive care unit," Hatfield said. • Heiner to Head Hospital Foundation Clyde M. Heiner, Gallivan, John A. Reinertsen and Joseph Rosenblatt, incorporated the foundation in 1990 in order to direct public attention and support to the unique role of University Hospital as the clinical arm of the University of Utah School of Medicine. The foun-dation has grown to include 21 board mem-bers and 29 founders. Other current founda-tion trustees, in addition to the officers and founders above, include: Fred S. Ball, Reed W. Brinton, Carol M. Fay, Bary N. Ingham, Judith B. Jones, Michael C. Korologos, Kay W. Lipman, Claudia S. Luttrell, Norma W. Matheson, John M. Matsen, M. D., Thomas K. Smith • Sr., vice president of Questar Corporation, was elected president of the University Hospital Foundation and chairman of the Board of Trustees during the annual meeting recently. Patricia A. Richards, executive vice president and manager, trust group, First Security Bank, is vice president/ secretary; and Ronald G. Humphries, controller, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, is vice president/ treasurer. Heiner, who was assistant administrator of University Hospital in the 70s, succeeds E. R. Dumke, Jr., a founder of the Hospital Foundation, who served as president for five years. Dumke, along with W. Hughes Brockbank, John \ Y. Conference on Ethical Issues at End of Life Richard Selzer, M. D., FACS, an emeritus professor of surgery at the Yale School of Medicine and well- known author of numerous books of essays and short stories, will be featured speaker at the International Interdisciplinary Rocky Mountain Ethics Conference Dec. 5- 8 at the Yarrow Hotel, Park City. Titled " Current Controversies and Ethical Issues at End of Life," the conference also will feature presentations by Margaret P. Battin, Ph. D., University of Utah professor of philosophy and adjunct professor of internal medicine, Division of Medical Ethics at the U medical school; Diann B. Uustal, Ed. D., M. S., R. N., a clinical ethicist; and Maggie Callanan, R. N., health- care consultant and writer. In addition to the featured speakers, 17 professionals from Salt Lake area hospitals and other health- care agencies will explore strategies and solutions to the ethical issues facing consumers and caregivers. Selzer also will present a discussion of " Expenses and Ethics" at Surgery Grand Rounds at the U medical school Dec. 6 at 7: 30 a. m. The conference, which will provide 15 contact hours of continuing education in nursing, is coordinated by the Office of Community Service in the U of U College of Nursing. Additional co- sponsors include: Nursing Practice Department and Department of Surgety, University of Utah Hospital; Division of Medical Ethics, University and LDS hospitals; Intermountain Health Care; and Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
