Hardin, M.D., an expert on the mechanisms of diabetes in children with cystic fibrosis, has joined the faculty of the medical school as Director of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology. An associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Hardin also is co- director of the Utah Diabetes Center. Hardin graduated summa cum laude with degrees in biology and English litera-ture from Indiana University- Purdue University in 1981. She graduated with distinction from the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed resi-dency training in pediatrics there. She was on the faculty of the University of Texas Medical School, Houston, and Baylor College of Medicine before coming to the U of U. " Dr. Hardin brings remarkable skills and compas-sion to the care of children with diabetes and other endocrine diseases," said Edward B. Clark, M. D., professor and chair of the pediatrics department. " She is a tireless clinician and dedicated scientist. Her presence at the University of Utah and Primary Children's Medical Center assures continued improve-ment in the lives of these children and their families." Hardin is the author of the national teaching manual for the management of cystic fibrosis- related diabetes, and of nearly 50 papers, book chapters and research presentations. She also is nationally recog-nized for her work on type 2 diabetes of youth as well as for management of growth disorders in patients with cystic fibrosis and HIV. She is an elected member of the Society for Pediatric Research, and her laboratory investigations are supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Utah County's First Air Ambulance Chief flight nurse Ken Matthews discusses flight operations at a VIP open house celebrating AirMed's new base at Timpanogos Regional Hospital. More than 1,100 Utah County residents attended two days of events which featured food, displays and a chance to check out one of the program's helicopters. " This base in Utah County is the culmination of a 10- year dream for us," said Matthews. One of the program's three helicopters is based in the county for 12 hours a day and helps reduce response time to patients in central and southern Utah. Dementia Conference Scheduled Oct. 16 The Gerontology Center at the College of Nursing is co- sponsoring " Caring for Persons With Dementia: Research, Intervention and Management" on Monday, Oct. 16 at the Marriott University Park Hotel. The conference is part of the Jim and Joyce Harris Caregiver Program in Gerontology and Nursing. Internationally recognized dementia researchers William Thies, Ph. D., Alzheimer's Association; Rebecca Logsdon, Ph. D., University of Washington; and Richard Schuhz, Ph. D., University of Pittsburgh; as well as a number of U faculty members are scheduled to speak. U of U Transplant Patients Celebrate 35 Years of Success Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Gather for Brunch More than 50 former blood and marrow transplant patients and their caregivers recently gathered at Sugarhouse Park for brunch. Although the program hosts a Summer picnic every two years, the brunch gives survivors a chance to share their stories in a smaller, more personal setting, according to Asha Parekh, BMT volunteer coordinator. A presentation by breast cancer survivor Kaylene Mower highlighted the event which featured donated items from Costco, Millcreek Coffee and Bagel Company, the Salt Lake Roasting Company and Tastee's Cafe. The hospital's 12 BMT volunteers provide support to cancer patients undergoing transplants. BMT patients often spend four to six weeks in the hospital and must be kept isolated during their stay. Recipients of kidneys, lungs and hearts transplanted at University of Utah Hospital over the past 35 years recently gathered at Sugarhouse Park for a reunion picnic. Since the hospital's first successful kidney transplant in 1965, more than 1,300 adult and pediatric patients have received kidney transplants at the U. In the last year, a record- setting 82 kidney transplants were performed at the hospital. The university's lung transplant program, the only one of its kind in the Intermountain West, was started in 1993. In the last year, 13 patients from across the region received lung transplants. The hospital's heart transplant program was established in 1985 and is part of the Utah Transplantation Affiliated Hospitals ( U. T. A. H.) Cardiac Transplant Program. One of the largest centers in the country, the program has performed more than 680 adult and pediatric transplants since its inception. Shirt Sales Raise $ 1,000 for House T- shirt sales from last Spring's National Organ and Tissue Awareness Week activities raised more than $ 1,000 which was recently donated to Salt Lake's Common Thread Trans-plant House, according to Kim Phillips, R. N. The house provides a place for organ recipients and their families from outside the Salt Lake area to live before and after their transplant. Phillips says potential heart and lung transplant patients are required to stay in Salt Lake in case an organ becomes available. American Indian Healing Altar Dedicated in Hospital's Hope Chapel An American Indian healing altar was recently dedicated in the hospital's second- floor Hope Chapel. The ceremony was performed by former hospital social worker Anthony Smith, who is a member of the Navajo/ Apache tribe. The altar, which was created and donated by Smith in honor of the installation of chaplain Mark Allison, features objects symbolizing healing and man's connec-tion to the earth. These include a willow stick, eagle feather, sage, sweet grass, tobacco, red felt and the color blue. A plaque describes the meaning of each symbol. Students Volunteer at CARE Fair Third- year medical student Jeff Anderson examines a child at the Junior League of Salt Lake City's annual CARE Fair. Twenty- eight U medical students, two faculty members and a number of volunteer physicians and nurse practitioners from the community participated in the event which provides free exams for low income families. This year, the group provided 535 exams. " Our students provided exams with kindness and compassion to those who would not otherwise be able to see a provider for routine care," said Marc E. D., associate professor and chief of the Division of Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery, and Elaine Weiss, Ed. D., clinical associate professor of family and preventive medicine, were two of seven women recently honored with the Out-standing Achievement Award from the YWCA of Salt Lake City. Register Now for Trauma Symposium Breakfast Caps Rehab Week Activities Rehab staff were treated to a Dutch oven mountain man breakfast, including apple crisp, on Sept. 21 in recognition of rehabilitation awareness during National Rehabilitation Week. Keith Barney, M. S. W., inpatient rehabilitation; Susan Wise, rehab educator and Trish Jensen, rehab coordinator, led the activity. During the week, other activities designed to show appreciation to the dedicated staff included thank- you give- aways, bagels and the traditional bingo. " This week finishes off a summer of activities such as camping, river rafting and canoeing for former patients," said Jensen.
