She was recognized as an " exemplar"- a critical care nurse who, in her ordinary everyday work, does extraordinary things- during the presidential address at the 1991 National Teaching Institute and Critical Care Exposition of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses ( AACN), held in Boston in mid- May. AACN is the largest specialty nursing organization in the country, with more than 70,000 members. A graduate of the U College of Nursing and a staff nurse for four M. D. Degrees bachelor's degree in University studies at graduation exercises. James H. " Red" Duke, Jr., M. D., professor of surgery and John B. Holmes Professor of Clinical Sci-ences, The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, delivered the commencement address. ' There's More to Life Than Your Professional Career," Dr. Duke's topic, reflected his own life- as a trauma surgeon, academician, recognized television personality in his field, sportsman and conservation-ist. Dr. Duke earned a divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theologi-cal Seminary before going to medical school. He has taught at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he also pursued graduate studies in chemical engineer-ing, biochemistry and computer science. After spending two years in AS EXEMPLARY years, Cornish is a " high tech/ high touch" nurse, superbly blending the humanistic and technologic aspects of critical care, according to Sandi Martin, R. N., MICU head nurse, and an AACN board member. " The qualities Cindy brings to nursing are usually seen in someone with far more experience," Martin said. Born in Idaho but reared in Salt Lake City, Cornish began her nursing career on 4 North, but turned to critical care nursing because she felt she could be of greater help to patients in that specialty. A newly-wed, she likes to go fishing, camping and hiking. Go to 105 Afghanistan as a visiting professor at Nangarhar University, he joined the faculty at Houston, where he has held many administrative positions. He established Houston's Hermann Hospital Life Flight operations in 1976, and remains the medical director of its trauma and emergency services. U President Chase N. Peterson, M. D., saluted the graduates. William A. Gay, Jr., M. D., vice president for health sciences; Walter Stevens, Ph. D., medical school dean, Hal S. Cole, M. D., president of the Utah Medical Association; and members of the U Board of Trustees and the Utah State Board of Regents also partici-pated. The new physicians will go on to residency, research or graduate study programs throughout the country. Twenty- three of them will begin residency training at U Hospital and its affiliated hospitals. It's Showtime! Abe Bakhsheshy, director of Environmental Services, has lined up a number of movies for the summer. Films through the first part of July include " Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead," on June 4; and " Robinhood," with Kevin Costner on June 12. Also coming ( on dates yet to be determined) are: " City Slickers," with Billy Crystal; " Naked Gun 2 1/ 2," with Leslie Nielsen; " Terminator 2," with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and " Mobsters," with Patrick Dempsey. Signs will be posted in the Cafete-ria on the day tickets will be avail-able, on a first- come first- served basis, in Room AR131. Dr. James H. " Red" Duke, Jr. Goodbye to Parking on West Medical Drive Beginning the second week of June- around the 13th or 14th- West Medical Drive will be closed to parking permanently. According to Alma Allred, U director of parking, construction will begin that week to create a four- lane thoroughfare. " The Utah Department of Transportation had given the road to the University on a temporary basis, and we have run out of time," Allred said. He estimates that about 80 cars will be displaced. Allred encouraged employees to consider using the South Terrace, which has 550 stalls, since future campus construction will continue to create a parking crunch for A and U sticker- owners. Cost for south terrace parking is $ 6 per pay period or $ 150 per year. Allred also suggested the alterna-tive of parking on lower campus and using the shuttles, which run every 20 minutes. The U Hospital parking committee recognizes employees' parking frustrations and is working on a number of plans to improve the situation, Allred said. Hope Chapel Services Sunday regligious services are held in U Hospital's Hope Chapel and patients and employees are invited to attend. Interdenominational Christian services are at 1: 20 p. m. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints has a service at 10: 30 a. m., and Catholic mass is at 3: 15 p. m. Clinic to Study Panic Attacks Persons with anxiety disorders are being sought for treatment- oriented research at the Mood Disorders Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry. According to Frederick W. Reimherr, M. D., assistant professor of psychiatry and clinic director, the study will use medications to treat the symptoms of anxiety. There are different kinds of anxiety disorders, including panic attacks, obsessive- compulsive disorders and general anxiety. This particular study will focus on panic attacks. Researchers are seeking people who experience a minimum of one major panic attack a week and one mild panic attack in the same week. " Major" attacks must include at least four of the following symptoms: shortness of breath, choking or smothering sensation, palpitations or accelerated heart rate, chest pain or discomfort, sweating, nausea or abdominal distress, feelings of unreality, tingling sensation, hot flashes or chills, trembling or shaking, fear of dying, fear of going crazy or losing control. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Regular visits with a physician will be scheduled between 8 a. m.- 5 p. m. Medications and associated study costs are free. Travelers' Clinic Provides Health Safety Tips A Travelers' Clinic has opened in U Hospital's outpatient department to counsel travelers, especially those planning visits to developing coun-tries, on health precautions they should take, and to evaluate those who show symptoms of illness after they come back home. The clinic is open Fridays from 4- 6 p. m. at U Hospital. Physicians on the staff are Thomas G. Evans, M. D.; Andrew T. Pavia, M. D.; DeVon C. Hale, M. D.; and Larry J. Wright, M. D. The latest information regarding tropical diseases, and all required immunizations is available. Appoint-ments may be made by calling the clinic at 585- 3203. Two Gain Promotions Lawrence M. Mauck has been named administrative manager of the Department of Surgery. Mauck began working for U Hospital in 1986, and formerly was director of Hospital Accounting. Tamra D. Morgan has been promoted to accounting manager in Hospital Accounting, overseeing general accounting and accounts payable. She started working in the University treasurer's office in 1984 and came to U Hospital in 1987. Western Art on Display An exhibit of Western art has been hung in the Hospital lobby display cases and will continue through July 16. The survey, curated by Will South, includes works by Thomas Moran, Mahonri Young and Fritz Scholder, artists who interpreted the Western environment in terms of both its landscape and its inhabitants.
