Volume5/1999_May25May 25, 1999 PULSE Medical Women's Group Recognizes Professor's Gender- Equity Efforts Neal Whitman, Ed.D., professor and director of educational development in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, recently received the Gender Equity Award from the U's chapter of the American Medical Women's Association ( AMWA). The Gender Equity Award recognizes faculty members who promote a gender- fair environment for the education and training of women physicians and who assure equal opportunities for women and men to study and practice medicine. Among gender- equity considerations are the use of gender- neutral and appropriate language; discussion of the unique differences in disease etiology, incidence, diagnosis, treatment and outcome for women and men; and encouragement of equal participation from all members of the team/ classroom. Whitman established the Weiss Memorial Lectureship, which has consistently selected women as speakers; arranged for Frances Conley, M. D., to speak to medical students about her resignation from a tenured position at Stanford in protest of sexism; and arranged for Utah Attorney General Jan Graham to speak to medical students about domestic violence. The Weiss memorial lecture honors Whitman's father- in- law, the late Bernie Weiss, M. D., a general internist who practiced in New York. Dr. Weiss practiced " good doctoring," Whitman said, and the visiting professors are chosen to encourage medical students to develop good doctor- patient communication skills. AMWA, with 60 members at the U, is a national organization devoted to the advancement of women in medical science and the recognition of women's health issues. The local chapter's activities focus on education, networking and outreach. AMWA's local chapter outgoing and incoming officers include: Sara Johnson, Margaret Solomon, Marta Heilbrun, Ai Sakonju, Deborah Hunter, Stephanie Zone, Alison Oki and Jenn Snow. Story board Expo Winners Announced Congratulations to the winners of this year's hospital Storyboard Expo. The University Neuro-psychiatric Institute won the people's choice and creativity awards with its storyboard The Ball Game. Moran Surgery won the outcomes award for Patient Education & Computer Training. The NBICU was the overall winner with its storyboard Electronic Clinical Pathway. Reproductive Medicine Laboratories Receive National Accreditation The medical school's Andrology and In Vitro Fertilization ( IVF) laboratories have been awarded a two- year accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists ( CAP). The laboratories have been continuously certified since 1994, according to Douglas T. Carrell, Ph. D., assistant professor of surgery and director of both laboratories. " The University has the only reproductive laboratories in the region which are CAP- certified," said Carrell. " The honor is reflective of the high quality of service provided by both laboratories. " The CAP accreditation program examines all aspects of quality assurance in the laboratory, including methodology, reagents, medical equipment, specimen handling, manuals, proficiency testing and safety. The accreditation program was established in 1993. Service at Annual Quality Begins With UAwards Banquet U Physician, Nurse and Airmed Paramedic Receive Utah EMS Honors Timothy R. Wolfe, M. D., associate professor of emergency medicine, and Karen Tesch, R. N., a nurse in UH's Emergency Department, have been named Utah Emergency Physician and Nurse of the Year by the Emer-gency Medical Services ( EMS) Week Awards Committee. In addition, David Fluckiger, a Davis County Sheriff s deputy and part- time paramedic for AirMed, has been named Utah Paramedic of the Year. The awards are presented annually as part of the Utah EMS community's observance of National Emergency Medical Services Week ( May 16- 22). This year's awards selection committee included representatives from the Utah Association of EMTs, Health Directors Association, the Utah Fire Chief s Association and the Utah Emergency Nurses Association. Wolfe was nominated for his work as the Summit County EMS medical director. He is credited with significantly improving the quality and organization of EMS services in the county and his influence is considered one of the primary factors in the decision to integrate ambu-lance service into the Park City Fire District. Tesch was nominated for her work in teaching, mentoring and supporting emergency medical technicians ( EMTs). She coordinates EMT student rotations through UH's Emergency Department. She also has been a key figure in facilitating communication between state EMS providers and the hospital. She currently serves as the medical team coordinator for Utah's Urban Search and Rescue Team. Fluckiger was honored for his role in stopping an erratic driver. While he was on duty, Fluckiger's patrol vehicle was hit head on by a car at 50 miles per hour. Although injured, Fluckiger forced his door open and came to the aid of the driver of the car that hit him. The driver was in diabetic shock and had barely missed a school bus and several other vehicles before crashing into Fluckiger's vehicle. Breast Cancer Support Group Scheduled to Meet June 2 Image Reborn, a breast cancer support group, will meet Wednesday, June 2 at 7 p. m. at UH's Women's Health and Breast Care Center ( 555 South, Foothill Boulevard, suite 550). Guest speakers will include Joan Clark, clinical outpatient dietician, who will address the importance of good nutrition; Monica Hunt, a nationally certified water aerobics instructor and breast cancer survivor, who will discuss the benefits associated with exercise and muscle tone; and Vicky Rosser, R. N., who will review cautions and recom-mendations associated with complementary and alternative therapies. The group is directed by Renato Saltz, M.
