Volume5/1999_May05May 5, 1999 PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER Health Fair, Prize Drawings and Fun UH Activities Mark Hospital Week University Hospital will observe National Hospital Week (May 9- 15) with a variety of activities. On Tuesday, May 11, there will be an Employee Health and Information Fair in the cafeteria from 10 a. m.- 2 p. m. It will feature free evaluations and screenings for osteoporosis, cholesterol and glucose levels, and sleep and snoring problems. Information also will be available about heart healthy- eating, reducing stress, and the importance of exercise. There will be lots of free goodies, including drawings for bike helmets and a $ 175 Miracle Juicer. Representatives from hospital Human Resources also will be at the event to answer questions about UH's new Employee Referral Program, recent changes in the University's payroll system, and the University's KRONOS and PeopleSoft systems. Throughout the week, the Office of Performance, Monitoring and Improvement will host a Storyboard Expo on the first- through fourth- floor bridges. The event is designed to give departments and teams the opportunity to share their process improvement efforts. Lagoon Day Tickets On Sale Next Week Tickets for this year's University Hospital Lagoon Day, scheduled for Thursday, July 15, will be on sale next Monday through Friday from 11 a. m.- l p. m. in the cafeteria. Tickets are $ 11 ( maximum four per employee) and include a catered barbeque lunch or dinner. Employ-ees unable to attend on July 15 can purchase tickets for $ 13 ( maximum four per employee) to use at their convenience throughout the summer. To purchase tickets, hospital employees must show their University identification cards. Beginning on May 17, tickets will be on sale in the Cashier's Office between 7: 30- 8: 30 a. m. and 3- 5 p. m. Monday through Friday. Tickets also will be sold in the cafeteria between 11 a. m.- l p. m. on paydays May 21, June 7, June 22 and July 7. All tickets are available on a first- come, first- served basis. UH Staff Ready WalkAmerica Exhibits Claire Stanley, R. N., and Vieki Weisenberg set up the perinatal education display at the hospital- sponsored health fair held in conjunction with the March of Dimes WalkAmerica. In addition to sponsoring the health fair, UH employees donated a record- setting $ 11,000 to the charity. See back for raffle winners, photos. C PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER Hospital Games and Summer BBQJune 17 UH's annual hospital games and employee barbeque is scheduled for Thursday, June 17. A variety of new events, in addition to the traditional bed- pan relay and hospital bed race, is planned. Watch Pulse for more details. Space Still Available in Spanish Class Nursing Education and Human Resources are offering a course in basic Spanish for health- care provid-ers beginning on May 11. The five- week course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7: 30- 8: 30 a. m. Deadline for registration is this Thursday; a minimum of 10 participants is needed to hold the course. Classes, which begin this week, will be held on Thursdays from 4- 6 p. m. in the Browning auditorium. Cost for the course is $ 50.
