Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) enzymatically catalyses decarboxylation of glutamate to gamma-amino butyric acic (GABA), the major inhibitory CNS neurotransmitter. High levels of autoantibodies to GAD are associated with numerous neurologic disorders including stiffman syndrome, limbic encephalitis, epilepsy,and cerebellar ataxia.
